How to Get Rid of Scabies
"Oh God! What is that? Gross! It's like zig-zagging bumps all over my skin!" If you're hearing that from your daughter's room you have two things to worry about 1) she's infested with scabies, and 2) where the hell did she get the scabies from? Relax, scabies aren't technically a sexually transmitted disease. Scabies are usually found in very crowded areas, or heavily populated places. Summer camps, hospitals, schools, and malls are all great places to get the Human Itch mite, Scabies, or Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis for those of us with PhDs. You can get scabies from prolonged contact (sometimes sexual) with anyone, just as long as the mite has enough time to get from their skin to yours. Don't worry, they're easy to get rid of, not much harder than head lice or crabs.

Scabies Symptoms and RemediesThe scabies symptoms usually include, but are not limited to, acne-like irritations of the skin, zig-zagging burrows that look like little blisters, rashes, and a severe itching sensation during the night. These symptoms are usually found on or felt on the hands, elbows, breasts, knees, genitals, and that one terrible, awful spot right between your shoulder blades where you can never quite reach. If you think you have a scabies infection, here's what you should do: |
|||
| Topical ointments, sprays and creams with Permethrin are the most common ways to treat a scabies infestation. Most labels will ask you to apply the cream to almost all parts of the body, let sit for up to 8 hours, and then wash yourself off in hot water. The process may need to be repeated a week later, to make sure there is no recurring infestation. | ![]() |

| RID® Lice Control Spray is a common topical scabies treatment. As far as poison goes, it has the lowest amount of Permethrin than any of the other Lice & Scabies treatments, making it the perfect solution for most children and adults. | ![]() |
||
| NIX® Scabies treatment is a scant bit more powerful than RID, using more of the scabies killing poison Permethrin (only .5% more) to do its dirty work. Because of the increased potency, it's a good idea not to drink, inhale, or touch this stuff to your eyes. Safe for adults and children over the age of 3. | ![]() |
||
| R&C® Spray is probably one of the most chemically powerful scabies treatments, which is why it's meant not to be used on the skin. This is the stuff you spray on non-washable items to make sure scabies mites don't have a place to hide while you bathe yourself in Permethrin creams. | ![]() |

Wash all linens and laundry in hot water to make sure you get rid of scabies for good. This process should be followed up by drying all linens and laundry in a hot drier, for good measure. |

Professional Scabies TreatmentOf course, if the home remedies aren't working, it might be a good idea to go see your doctor. Medical treatment of scabies doesn't usually differ much from the home remedies in that they often use Permethrin based creams to kill the scabies (like Elimite dermal cream), and your typical anti-histamine creams to relieve the itching. Your doctor will more than likely scrape a bit of skin off to get a sample, testing it for the eggs, fecal matter, or the mites themselves. But your physician should know that a misdiagnosis of the problem is one of the reasons scabies infestations last as long as they do, and why they're still such a big problem in highly-populated areas.
