Ah, bacterial vaginosis: the basis of all those jokes my guy friends told in college. You know, the ones involving tuna. And vaginas. Right. Anyway, those jokes always made me vaguely paranoid. I was pretty sure my vagina didn’t smell like fish, but who could be sure? It’s not as if my nose and my vagina get a lot of time to chat. Turns out, I was worried over nothing. That fish smell is unique to vaginas infected with bacterial vaginosis, which I’ve never had. If you, on the other hand, have been unlucky enough to come down with a case of BV, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s the most common vaginal infection, so you’re not even close to alone, and getting rid of bacterial vaginosis is as easy as having your doctor write out a prescription. It’s extremely common for the infection to recur, though, and nobody wants that. So get rid of bacterial vaginosis first, and then work on following the tips for prevention that are outlined in my article.
