Yes. Caterpillars are amazing. Yes. Some of them are quite stunning. Yes. They turn into beautiful butterflies and moths. And yes. They can be a huge pain in the ass. They can be a huge pain in the ass to get rid of too. Knowing the kind of destruction they can cause makes me understand why my dad always encouraged us to kill caterpillars when we saw them. He did, just so you know, teach us which caterpillars to leave alone too. The good caterpillars (monarchs, viceroys, etc.) we just kept in jars. We didn’t just get rid of caterpillars indiscriminately. Generally we were hunting the dreaded tent caterpillar. Dad had some ornamental fruit trees that these damn bugs always seemed to find their way onto. So, getting rid of caterpillars became a family affair. There are a few things I know now that I wish I had known then. It would have made our attempts at caterpillar control more successful. Oh well. At least now I can help others with their caterpillar issues. If you have tent caterpillars or any other type of caterpillar that you’re trying to get rid of, check out this article.
