That's a question I couldn't answer with any authority. Java is good. It makes the internet much easier to use. The problem is, it also makes the internet more dangerous, because people use Java to attack you the same way they use any other platform. So, tell Norton it's okay if there's a little Java on the page and then cease all visits to shady porn sites or sites claiming to have the latest nude pictures of (insert celebrity here).

Pop-up ads or pop-ups are a form of online advertising on the World Wide Web intended to attract web traffic or capture email addresses. It works when certain web sites open a new web browser window to display advertisements. The pop-up window containing an advertisement is usually generated by JavaScript, but can be generated by other means as well. But i think google as a webmaster is trying to do something about it!!

Avast does on occasion flag things that aren't really adware. (ie. false positives.) However, Alexa is technically spyware since it's sending usage statistics back to its servers in order to keep track of where you are or where you've been.

T'is true. Marketing specialists have been tracking you and your behaviors for decades. There are white papers written about you and your family that companies like Walmart and Target use as references when they're designing store layouts. I can pay $50 today and learn just about anything I want to know about you and your family, including where you lived, previous addresses, credit information, etc--just about anything really.

So, what Google is doing is hardly news, and it's a lot less evil than anything real marketing companies do. Watch the movie "Consuming Kids." You'll throw your television in the garbage and start homeschooling your children.

The Google is your new god, knave! It's not your place to question its presence. It exists whether you accept it into your heart or not.

But seriously, those ads are the only reason we are able to spend our days doing research and writing articles for you. Sure, they can be annoying sometimes, and spooky at other times, but we actually get people telling us that they're happy we have them because it gives people options when they're searching for solutions to their problems.

Personally, I don't think I've ever clicked on an ad in my life. That's just me.

Get Rid of Thingers,
Is there a way to block all of the annoying ads that show up on the side bars and banners of so many websites these days (including yours). They are against my religion.
I know they have pop up blockers. Why can't we block google ads? Is it because "the google" wants to control everything, and makes enormous amounts of money by poisoning our minds with targeted ads? We even allow them to read what we are writing so they can target the ads further. There is something very wrong with that. Don't you agree?
Yours Truly,
Billy Rubin

Try this..go to the library or someone's house you don't like..using thier computer log onto that site. If it happens again it's THEIR SITE that's intentionally doing it, if not it's YOUR hardrive and your security missed it. Oh, is your hard drive partitioned? I'm an ol Symantec user..if you log on to them they will scan your system. It's malware not a cookie..you may need a tool to remove it..they have that also.

Bossy,

I'd say you're doing the best that you can. I had a similar situation with one of the dragonflying sites I frequent. I had to contact the system administrator/owner of the site to alert them to the presence of the malware. After that, it's up to them to solve the problem. There's not a lot else you can do aside from what you've already done. You seem like a fairly knowledgeable person when it comes to computer matters, so I don't think this answer comes as any surprise.

You could always try putting the malware's url into your host file as a 127.0.0.1 registration, but I'm not sure you want to be messing around with your host file or convincing your computer that their site is your localhost.

I received adware today from a site that I visit regularly that is self-replicating and is the kind that the only way you can get out of it is to turn off your computer. It is one of those ads that purport to be a computer virus protection program and does a rendition of what they say is a scan of your computer and says that you have all these virus on your computer and so you need to buy their program to get rid of the virus, trojans, spyware and other malware. I have tried contacting the site I visit where this malware connects with me (it doesn't happen on any other site I visit, so I know its not my own security programs), but with little help. The only other avenue I know is not to go to that site anymore. Even after contacting them, I have tried blocking the malware's urls, emptying my history, cache and cookies with no success. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I am a Windows XP OS user, using Foxfire browser, with Spyware Doctor, AVG virus protection as well as the internal virus security and firewall supplied by my XP.

I am really getting miffed at MSN, Windows, ZDNET, CNET, to name a few, who give you the information to fix/clean/repair/increase speed, ect FREE, only to find out in the end that ya get the info free, but not the FIX (even after going back and rereading the full website and it is to be totally free--no catches). You have to go and get a second mortgage to fix the problems, your are just told you have them free! Or the "with trial pay"... Go this route and everyone in the internet will get your information one way or another. What happened to the real fixes for Internet Exp or MSN or Windows? Don't they want to have some credibility, after all the recent publicity over leaks? You can't even get "HELP". Is there a reporting service for false advertising? I am not referring to the "free scan"; I mean the free everything as recommended by MSN, ect.

I purchased my Dell Latitude last March and still do not have ANY of the disks, even for the software I purchased--they said it was shipped, deal with Windows, Windows sends you to Dell. I do not have any restore disks, Office disks. Where can a person go to report all of this? I am out close to $900.00 in purchased software that has been verified to never have been loaded on my system by Dell and Window, but I am told to repurchase it!! HELP.

Turn it on and then frustrate over having to hold down your control key then click, to open certain sites. Example would be Lowes sale flier in your e-mail or Rocklers e-mail catalog update/sale flier. To get there from your email, gotta hold down the control/click or you will get zapped.

I'm a fan of Avast! It's free and I think they even have an online virus scanner. If there isn't a virus detected, you may want to get your hands on Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. That's pretty good for removing malware and other "nonlethal" but intrusive softwares.
