I have heard that the susceptibility of which you speak is genetic, and related to ethnicity. I'd hate to think of anyone taking lithium to get rid of a fungal infection though.

I never knew it could be that complicated. So, this is BO that can't be mitigated with daily bathing? Check out our article on the subject, maybe you can get some ideas from it.

Please know that I am not attempting to infer that ALL underarm BO problems are a result of what was diagnosed with me but it is highly possible that that it could be the same which is easily treatable. It would be worth trying the treatment mentioned below, HOWEVER, keep in mind there is always that percentage that it may NOT be caused by the same and therefore it would be wise to discuss the matter w/ your doctor first before attempting this OTC treatment. PLUS, antimicrobial antiseptics can have side effects as well so, I again reemphasize the importance of discussing it with your doctor first.

Twenty-five years ago I had problems with underarm BO (which actually had been periodically ongoing throughout my life from childhood). Over the years, all my light-colored/white shirts in the underarm area became stained with yellow and ruined my shirts.

During a visit with my doctor back then, feeling embarrassed, I told him about the BO problem (and fabric staining) wondering if there was anything he could do. He explained it was likely caused by a topical staph or a type of bacterial skin issue that was easily treatable. He wrote a prescription for an antimicrobial antiseptic (a bacteriostatic cleansing agent which has a bacteriostatic action that cleanses the skin against staphylococci and other gram-positive bacteria). It was also stressed that it was important that I also use an antibacterial soap such as Dial soap IN ADDITION TO the antiseptic. (BTW, Dial now also makes non-antibacterial soap so be sure it is the antibacterial type during treatment.) After several applications, the odor AND yellow stains disappeared completely for 25 years – that is… until just a few weeks ago when the problem reappeared again (perhaps stress-induced, I don't know). Since the original product is available by prescription only, I mentioned the problem to my new doctor and asked if he would be willing to prescribe the antimicrobial antiseptic to treat this again. Surprisingly, he had never heard of the antiseptic, much less the causation concept of underarm BO as what I had been originally told. So, since it was new to him, he prescribed a different type of antimicrobial antiseptic which turned out to be available OTC! After the first use, I immediately noticed within a day that the odor had disappeared (thus validating the original diagnosis).

So, for anyone who has this problem, you might want to mention this to your physician or since antimicrobial antiseptics are available OTC, you could try it on your own and see if it takes care of the problem. But as I already said, please be careful for the reasons stated above.

While researching other topics at OHSU, reading
a journal called Medical Hypotheses, I came across
an article on lithium and its apparent function to
enable the mobility of white blood cells.

As a science writer many disparate and apparently
unrelated datums often come together so as to lead
to new questions, and amidst my research the question
came up as to why some people are particularly
susceptible to fungal infections while others are
not.

This in turn lead to the association of suggestive
datums relating to dermatitus, manic depression
and supposedly unrelated issues in terms of health.

In a manic depressive patient I know on oral lithium
orotate it was noticed soon after beginning
this regimen that a long-time genital
ringworm infection suddenly disappeared.

It seems possible that susceptiblity to these
and tinea-type infections might reflect a deficiency
of this essential mineral . . . perhaps a
greater need for it than in others.

The cost differential between prescriptive
salves and this supplement could be very large
considering it might also help with athletes
foot or anything else related to yeast and
fungal infection susceptibility.

I had a huge canker sore that was causing me pain for about 3 days. Today, I decided I wasn't going to deal with the pain anymore. I search online and tried takinga Q-Tip and dipping it in hydrogen peroxide and rubbing it on the sore. It hurt like hell for a couple seconds but after it was completely numb. WORKS AWESOME

Some people are sensitive to sodium laureate, an ingredient in most toothpastes, increasing their chances of getting cankers. I switched to Squiggle (which has no sodium laureate), a toothpaste you can order on the internet. It has markedly decreased the frequency of cankers. When I get a canker, I use Aphthasol, a prescription medication. I strongly advise this approach. It has made all the difference in the world.

I have a reoccurant canker sore so I wake up almost every morning with one in the same spot in my mouth, but it always goes away within a coupple of hours! This is how, When I wake up I put hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and place it on my canker sore, leaving it there for 2 minutes, wait 5 min and do it again. It is ALWAYS gone within a coupple of hours for me, you can do this as many times as you wish until its gone. If I get Canker sores that aren't reoccurant I do this same thing and I works with them too and they dont come back. The Bigger the canker sore the longer it will take, i've been able to get rid of all mine within 4 days by doing this! you dont have to but I have also tried putting a little bit of salt on it along with the hydrogen peroxide and it hasn't seemed to make it worse?! ALSO---- If you want to eat a food but you wont because you know you will get a canker sore, just swish your mouth with hydrogen peroxide after you eat it and before you go to bed and you should be okay!!

I am sorry to hear about that condition that is a real bummer. It seems like any sugar or caffiene would stimulate the problem. I would stay awau from soda if I were in good health and certainly avoid it if I had a skin condition. Is it possible your diet could be improved. I used to have constant skin problems until I gave up cigarettes and a bad relationship. Stress is very bad. Smoking cigarettes prevents your body from healing. Do you get cold sores when it's a full moon? I had a friend that said she did? Good Luck.

I read Jonathan Hatches article on how to get rid of canker sores and thought it was very helpful. I have suffered from bad canker sores for about 7 to 8 years now. I only get them about twice a year now and not as bad as I once did. The first couple attacks I got, I could not eat for two week periods and could not barely talk. I would druel constantly from the pain. I went to a lot of doctors who perscribed me herpes medications. They eventually gave me the strongest herpes medication possible with no success. I later talked to a specialist who told me to avoid sodium lauryl sulfate in my toothpaste which seems to help a lot but does not completely solve the problem. I also have stayed away from any type of tree nut which seem to bring out the problem.

I just wanted to add that I have found a simple home remedy which helps when the canker sores come. I drink Coca Cola which seems to ease the pain (which if you have the problem you know how bad it is). I am not saying this is a 100 percent cure and it would help everyone. I am no doctor by any means I just felt if there were any other people out there suffering from the same problem as me to try drinking coca cola. It only seems to help me when I use classic coke not cherry or diet or any other. I am not sure why. Pepsi does not seem to offer the same relief either and I have no financial ties with coke I am just trying to help.

I also dissagree with drinking mouth wash. Maybe I am different from the norm but mouth wash seems to irritate the problem more. I think a lot of mouth washes have sodium lauryl sulfate as an ingredient, but I could be wrong on that statment.

Well thank you for reading what I have to say. Please feel free to respond or give me some of your helpful tips as I am a sufferer of canker sores.

On another forum there were many cures listed. I tried Black Walnut Oil Extract, directly on the site plus a few drops in water daily, and it is GONE!! I am very pleased, as many OTC creams did nothing. It was also advised to keep taking the drops in water to prevent recurrence. Having been plagued with this for years you can imagine how happy I am to have found an inexpensive remedy for this annoying and ugly problem.

I have been using baking soda toothpaste and that usually staved them off, but recently, I have gotten between 2 and 4 every month, huge ones that also make my lymph nodes under my chin painful . I saw the posts about toothpaste without SLS and will seek one out that also has baking soda.

I went to my dentist and he applied something called DEBACTEROL, which I understand you can also get online for about $60/12 applications. I choose to go back to the dentist, since my insurance covers it. There is an excruciating stinging pain for about 3 seconds (much worse than applying oragel) and then the canker sore is magically cauterized, never to cause you pain again. 3 seconds beats 3 weeks!

I would not wish these awful sores in my worst enemy.
Chew slowly, everyone!

Oooo! Hit a nerve. I bet the person who does your laundry, getagrip, uses bleach on your socks. This can cause the worst kind of foot odor; it will turn white paint on the walls green; cause goldfish to belly up; cause the drapery to curl up to the curtain rod; the sofa will run away with the love seat; the odor will clear a room in seconds. What would Ms Catwalk Do? What would Ms Hat Do? Nap time? LOL

I know, boy do I, that for some people using bleach when washing socks will really set off some foul orders. I feel you have already looked at her feet for rashes, overly dry patches, and not knowing the age of your daughter- knowing she washes her feet. I usta be a shoe freak (when I moved to AK, my now X, stopped counting my shoes when he reached 75 pairs and those were just my highheals). So I do know a little about shoes. Any of those made of plastic soles and/or uppers can make your feet excessively sweaty. If she wears this kind, have her stop and get a better quality shoe--you may find the pricing isn't that much different.

Age unkown problem again: if she wears socks, try having her wear the 100% cotton socks, much better for the skin. There is also the chance of a yeast infection and you may not see any evidence of this on her feet. What about the toe nails? Are they cut and cleaned; there is gross smelling stuff that can be under the nails even without any fungus or infections. Just showering and bathing does not get under the nails clean, so use a nail brush when washing.

Try having her use baking soda on her feet after a bath, as well as when going to bed and in her shoes. Also, to get soft skin on her feet and as an relaxing way to get them cleaner, have her soak her feet in warm water with oatmeal powdered in the blender. (same thing as the well known oatmeal bath that runs around $8 for 4 baths.)

See you doctor, an 'Urgent Care' type clinic or the ER. It is never safe to mess around with the chance of infection. Unknown to me until abot 5 years ago, infections can cause seriously permanent problems. From an on-purpose-accident, I ended up with every tooth broken in my mouth. Medicare (medi-old-people, even though I am still a baby) approved payment of the estimated work. Dentists do not take Medicare, as a rule, and Medicaid only covers pulling teeth for adults. As a result, as each tooth crumbles away and I have gotten many abcesses, I developed heart damage from the infection traveling to my heart (coula gone to lungs or brain). Had it been caught earlier, it might have been reversible, now it is to late.

For other, not so serious injuries BAG BALM is a very strong topical antibiotic, just don't read the can! I use it on me, the dog, the like of my life, kids, to remove sales tag sticky stuff when out of butter...

We used it when I worked as a Hospice volunteer for everything from Thrush and other mouth problems, to bed sores, dry skin (mostly as a lip balm), cuts, rashes, well Hospice is... Just don't try to self treat for the serious stuff.

No no no. Canker sores are sores on the tongue. I'm not certain about their origins. But they seem to be different from Cold Sores (ie. Herpes). I guess a quick wikipedia search might be in order.

Well I guess I don't know either. I thought sores in the mouth were absesses or gum diseases. I only heard of Canker sores on the outside of the mouth (also called Cold Sores) and they are a form of herpes, not the sames as the STD form, unless, uh, I'll stop here.

Anyway, I do not mean to imply or offend. I am honest in what I thought I knew to be canker sores. I knew wrong. Can someone shed some light? I'd really like to know what a canker sore is, the kind you get in your mouth and what causes causes them.
