I'm looking for some help in identifying the type of bee that is nesting above my kitchen door... I'm pretty sure it is either honeybees or yellow jackets, but aren't sure which of the two. As I understand, the resulting action I take may differ depending on which.

Here is a quick video I made of the nest:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcLT9lXVoPI

And here's a picture of some of the bees:
http://img.skitch.com/20100829-by1qiwpa5qixc6rmkjrjprmy9w.png

We've noticed the bees around this part of the house for a few months, but they've never been a nuisance at all. Only recently did we pinpoint the exact origin of their coming & going -- it is a space where our exterior siding meets an overhang. This is directly above our kitchen door, which we use daily.

Though there hasn't been any aggression from the bees yet, I'd still rather catch this while it is early in case they end up nesting through our walls, etc. Any ideas on the ID of the bee? Lack of aggression and presence of fur (which I'm at least somewhat confident about) makes me think honeybee -- but I could be wrong of course.

Thanks!
-Dave

As reported, I'd appreciate affirmation that painted, not stained wood, will discourage bees. How was this tested? What about pigmented stains? Why urethane paints. Live in log house and deal with these bees every year even though I plug every ** hole I can find and they return.

We have a lot, and I mean a lot of yellow jackets this year. You can not look in a two foot square without seeing at least one. Me and my sons have all been stung, a total of 7 times. They are every where in the front yard, the back yard, our grassy driveway, and around at the end of our garden near the chickens. We have looked all over and can't find the nest. Does any one have any ideas how to find it? I am very concerned with the amount of bees, it would be really bad if one of my sons came unknowingly to the nest in fact I don't want to come to close myself. Thanks to all.

Hi all. So I moved into a new house about a month ago, and decided I needed a bookshelf. I had one brought from my parents' house that had been sitting outside under a shelter for probably around 5 years. Well when we unloaded it, my dad informed me that some carpenter bees had burrowed into it.

Now I'm not sure what exact species they are, but they're fairly large and extremely common in south Georgia. They are not very aggressive, and we walk among them all the time without worry. Occasionally they will bump into you and scare the crap out of you, but that's usually it.

So after we shook the shelf around some, a couple of bees came out. Apparently they were still young, as they didn't seem to be able to fly. We got rid of them, banged on the wood some more, and heard no more buzzing...so we sprayed Raid in all the holes we found and moved the thing in.

Well a couple of weeks ago, I'm moving some stuff around on the shelf and hear loud buzzing from inside...long story short, bees started coming out. I killed several, moved the shelf back out onto the porch, and DOUSED the thing with Raid. So every day for the past two weeks, I've banged on the thing every time I've walked by it and sprayed the holes. Figured there might be about 5-8 in there.

APPROXIMATELY 30 BEES HAVE COME OUT OF THIS FORSAKEN THING over those two weeks. Some of them were mature and came out flying, others seemed quite young and just fell out. I killed most, and sprayed thoroughly to make sure the ones that escaped wouldn't move back in.

Monday I banged on the shelf for around a solid hour, and heard nothing else. Cleaned it up, moved it back in. Surely they're all gone, right? Well now, as I type this, I can hear MOVEMENT from inside the shelf.

I am this close to burning the thing and just buying a cheap one. But before I do, does anyone have ANY suggestions as to how to get the bloody creatures out? ALL OF THEM? I know this is a long post, but I have no idea what else to do, so any help would be great!

EDIT: I just read the article on carpenter bees. I'll get some putty tomorrow and see if I can get all the holes plugged. Since they apparently won't burrow out, maybe that'll do the trick.
