Why do you hate roaches? All they do is carry bacteria around. So let's say in the men's room of this restaurant some drunk guy missed by a few inches and the roach walks through it then its time to go into the kitchen across the stack of dishes and over the silverware to where the salad prep is all ready for the next customer. Yep..
nothing like a roach..except for maybe a fly. Think of something that throws up every time it feeds..Oh there's one on your french fries. Hey Let's go out to eat tonight.
LOL all your points are well taken. People just don't think about it.

Most bars and eateries have roaches regardless of what part of the world you are in. I hate roaches. I would move away, far far away. They are in your walls, if not in your apartment leaving their little droppings and multiplying like insanity.

Regarding pet food, it should be removed within 20 minutes of exposure just for health reasons for your pet. (Bacteria). Wash their dishes with hot soapy water and dry them. End of problem. Also, change their water ofter during the day. Moisture can breed mosquito and other blights.

I was just commenting on her boyfriend's static guard usage as well. Interesting way to get rid of static and acquire a respiratory illness of some sort.

With regard to your advice about how to get rid of gnats. These are very good suggestions, especially the pet food. I'd forgotten about pet food. I suppose it would make a pretty good medium for gnats/fruit flies to breed in if it were wet.

I can imagine the old beer/beer bottles problem can get annoying.

LOL..I just read all of your posts..Good advice about the fruit flies!! Strangely enough I'm going to be leaving in a minute to do the pest control ( I run a company) in an almost identical situation. A nasty bar ( your feet stick to the floor) with apts above. My client is a slum lord and won't do anything about it. The health dept has been in and wrote up a two page report but no fine or action.( bought him off) You are fortunate that you don't have roaches or mice!! Maybe it's all that static guard your boyfriend sprays around. Have you spoken to the owner or manager of this place? Do they care? Ear plugs are on sale at Home Depot!

HI!
I stumbled across your website on what I thought was another waste of 8 hours' time, vortexing on the internet with no luck... But I was wrong. You ROCK!!! Your advice about the vinegar and dish soap... Nothing short of brilliance. Since I didn't have the cheap stuff, I used an $8 bottle of Mrs. Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar that I was going to use for salad dressing and plain old Dawn dishsoap and combined in a very deep, fishbowl-type glass bowl. Within seconds, I saw 3 of those pesky things hovering (that's all they do, it seems, until they get tired, then I slap 'em with my palm and smear them all over my cabinets, counters, mirrors, etc) all over it. Amazing. Truly amazing.

I want to add additional points to your sage advice:

1) Don't spill wine, juice or vinegar (!!). If you do, clean it up IMMEDIATELY.
2) Only dispose of trash in covered containers within your home. Take it out EVERY morning.
3) If you feed your pets wet food, give them 10 minutes to eat what they want, then dispose (I use disposable paper bowls I buy in bulk) or pack away in the fridge.
4) Buy fly-paper and hang them where a) you feed pets b) your trash is c) anywhere else you see them around. Try to find the source.
5) If you eat fruit routinely and have to cut it, wash and store all utensils in the dishwasher. They can smell sugar on even "clean" knives/cutting boards sitting in a drainer.
5) If you live above a busy bar (like I do) whose employees dump old beer bottles, wine bottles, etc every 10 minutes into a dumpster near where your patio door is, MOVE.

Thanks again, and more pointers are welcome!

You know, if they're already in the house, you may be dealing with flies breeding in your drains or water pipes. I would try pouring some baking soda down your drains, followed by a cup of vinegar or two. Not only will you be preemptively unclogging your drains, but any flies that might be setting up shop will be killed.

As for flies that are simply getting into your home: I can't think of a better way to catch them than with a fly strip. I wish there was a miracle solution I invented, but there isn't.

Citronella does work in some instances, but much of the evidence concerning their effectiveness is anecdotal. So, do they work? I've used them to keep mosquitoes away, and I can tell you that I think it works. But that's subjective, and I might have simply "felt" that they were working, when they really weren't.

One question: do you have porch lights that you can change? If you have porch lights, I would recommend switching from plain white bulbs to a low pressure sodium bulb. Sodium bulbs tend to attract fewer bugs than plain white bulbs.

Perhaps even putting blinds up at night to help keep light from filtering through your windows (thus attracting less flies) would help?

Let us know how things turn out.

I will look into the smaller mesh for the screens, etc. We live in an apartment complex, so not sure how they would feel about it. I dismissed the idea at first because of less airflow through the apartment when the windows ARE open and the time and money it will cost to get it all done. Not to mention that here in Florida, the windows are only open a few months of the year - since the air is almost always on in the summer.

I purchased some garden-safe spray that is a 3-in-1: Fungicide, Insecticide & Miticide that I have been spraying every day on the house plant and the outdoor plants (we have to bring them in during bad weather). I also put out a dish with vinegar and a little dish soap, but it hasn't caught anything yet. Aside from fly strips, are there any other solutions to taking care of the bugs that might already BE inside? Mostly I have resorted to closing the windows at dusk and turning the air on (even if I don't need to), just to keep the bugs out...

I may justhave to invest in some citronella candles, but do they really work?

Off the top of my head, michatmaster7, I would replace the screens in your home with a smaller mesh. I would also check your window frames to make sure you don't have any crevices, cracks, or gaps between the fittings for your window screens and the window frame. Also, check your screen door (the smaller mesh screen advice applies here as well) for cracks and gaps.

A little weather stripping goes a long way if you have gaps that can't be sealed with plain old caulk.

If all else fails, have you thought about putting citronella candles next to your windows? Really, there isn't much you can do to stop gnats from getting in aside from putting money down on better barriers. Yes?

Ok, so I use the term "gnat" loosely, as described in your article. During the day when the sun is out, I don't see bugs in the house at all. We live on the 2nd floor of a 2 story apartment building, and we just happen to be right on the river (which is brackish water). At night, we turn the lights on inside (of course). I notice little flying bugs attracted to the lights. I call them gnats, but mostly they all look the same and are too large to be no-see-ums. I try to have the windows open to conserve electricity, especially when a nice breeze is coming through.

That was until the night I was in the back bedroom on the computer, playing a game, when I non-chalantly took a great big drink... only to my dismay when I saw out of the corner of my eye, a gnat had landed in my glass (low-concentrate of white grape and water).

Now the only thing I have been able to do so far is to close all the windows when the sun goes down and turn on the air conditioning. That helps keep them out.... but is sorta backwards. I'd rather NOT use the air...

I found a product at the local farm store called CV-80 mfg by Waterbury Country Vet. I heard people say they spray it on their screens and it keeps the bugs away for awhile... but upon reading the product label, it looks pretty dangerous.

What else can I do?

Well, latinstarlite, let's get a couple of questions answered before anyone else tries to answer this:

1. Where do you live, or where is your new home?
2. Do you have screens on your windows and doors, or are you doors and windows open often?

If I were going to take a wild guess, I would say fungus gnats are your problem. Here's a link to what I think might be an answer to your problem:

Hey everyone. My family recently moved into our first home.....you'd think we'd all be happy right? Wrong!! About 2 weeks or so after moving in we noticed little bugs flying around. We thought they were fruit flies and figured they would go away after tossing some potatoes and fruit that were starting to go bad. Wrong again! I kill at least 5 to 10 of these things every day. Some are teeny tiny little bugs and others are a bit bigger. The bigger ones must be on suicide missions or something cause they love to fly right up in your face. I've also noticed that I'm being bitten. Of course I'm the only one getting bitten. But this is a huge problem for me as my skin heals slow and I tend to scab and scar from the tiniest little scratch.

I don't have any house plants, I have put them all on my patio. I can't imagine where they are coming from but I need some sort of idea of where they could be coming from and how I can get rid of them. Thanks for your help.
