To get rid of body lice first you MUST wash all bedding, clothing in hot water. use a carpet shampooer with attachments to clean sofas and other cloth surfaces you can't wash easily. NOW to get the bugs off your body all u need is vinegar. Take a washcloth and wet it with vinegar, apply to affected areas. You will see little white bumps with hole in the middle. As you rub the vinegar over the areas little white long things will come off. They kinda look like long pieces of skin, usually in a circle. After using the vinegar the area will turn red. then slowly go away. You can buy spray for mattress cleaning of bugs, or use a shampooer.

The symptoms you descibe sound like classic bedbugs. Bedbug is actually somewhat of a misnomer, nonetheless, that is what is sounds like you have, and the black specks you found are their droppings. And, yes, you are being bitten by them. How do I know? Because my best friend in NYC was invested for 6 months and I heard the very detailed gory details for the entire time...so.....

These guys actually live, or start out living, in the woodwork, but they can move into the matresses, etc. You need to consult with a bedbug specialist, because other exterminators will not know what they're doing when it comes to this situation. Bedbugs are a unique category all their own, because they are so nefarious. They are of the dark side. You need special help. You cannot do this on your own. Believe me. There are not home made remedies for this, short of burning down your house.

Entomologist said no living organisms found. Dermatologist told wife she just has severe dry skin. Problem still exists. Really putting a strain on our marriage, this has totally consumed my wife and she stands at the sink all day rinsing hands and picking things off of her fingers. It almost feels like static when I where certain shirts. Really doesn't seem like a mite, but how would I know. We used revolution on our dog and now he seems to have more little white specks on him.

I finally sent out some specimins to an entomologist and am awaiting results. The problem seemed to be getting better for awhile but now is bad again. Some of the things we notice are black or white fuzz-balls all over clothing - really bad on socks. We can clean and dust and the next day, the surfaces are covered with white fibers and white crumb looking particles. We are using the highest efficiency furnace filter I could find and we still seem to get a lot of dust. Also itch or feel like something is crawling on skin while sitting on couches, at computer, in bed, etc. I will post again when I hear from ent.

About 1 month ago my wife started complaining that she was finding little black bugs in our towels and in our bathroom. Next, she started feeling bites all over. We initially thought it was fleas since we have a dog. We put flea foggers in every room of the house and treated the dog with a frontline type product. We then began vacuuming daily and washing all laundry in hot water. None of these things helped. Now my wife has bites on her scalp and is finding these little black specks all over the house and in our clothes and towels. This is taking over our lives, it feels like there are bugs on our skin and in our hair. We do not even invite anyone to our home because it feels "dirty". Does anyone have any type of advice? We live in Illinois.

Moo moo you are right,,it would be a waste of electricty and effort if the room is not enclosed. Do you have an outside storage area for the books? Maybe a garage or someplace exposed to the heat and cold but not the rain? Even a trunk of a car..If you put a " no pest strip" with your books and wrapped them in a plastic bag you would have created a mini fumigation chamber. Leave the little buggers out there for a few days.

This may sound like a silly question, but once the psocids have either been sprayed with the raid, or walked through the barrier.. how long generally, does it take for them to die?

Also I was advised in the summer that buying an A/C would be a waste of money as I don't have a bedroom door. Would this be the same if I bought a dehumidifier? Where my bedroom door would be, is a bannister and stairs that curves around and goes down to the first floor where there's a bathroom and bedroom, and then another staircase that leads to the ground floor.

Thanks for replying Getagrip. When I first found them in my folder I looked up what they were. Wouldn't really say my bedroom is humid, but I guess it must be for them to be here. Money is a bit tight at the moment (isn't it for most)so purchasing a dehumidifier isn't really a possibility at the moment, I guess if what I am doing at the moment doesn't work, I'll have to find the money to get one. Though if I've binned my old books how will I know if it's working.. :S

Thanks for the advice.

Look up "psocids".There are several types but all have one thing in common..they need high humidity (above 50%). A dehumidifier in the attic may be all you need.I would open all the old books and expose the insides to dry air.

Hello,

I say possible, I mean they could be something else, but as I've found them mainly in books, and paper and anything papery related, then I'm going to presume that is what they are. Tiny little whitish/brown things. Relatively fast for their size I guess. I first found them inside one of my binders. I thought I would sit and organise my printed out knitting patterns, and hole punch them and place them into my binder in the right sections, and when I opened into the middle of the binder I saw probably about 20 tiny brown dots, at first I thought they were specks of dust or something, but when I poked at one it moved. I do have a habit of buying second hand books. And my teddy making book that was stored next to the binder also had some in, as did my second hand knitting book, and boxes of photos, cardboard boxes etc, hence why I'm thinking they are book lice.
I live in an old town house, so my bedroom is essentially the attic, though there is a small square door in my ceiling that I assume leads to a small attic (I've lived here 5 years and never been up).

I've binned the binder, books, went through everything in my room (almost) and have either frozen anything I wanted to keep for 24hrs, or have binned it. I have a mountain of bin bags sat at the back door waiting to be taken away at the weekend.

I've sprayed Raid for cockroaches and ants, as it was the only bug spray I could find that had pyrethum in it. So far I've sprayed a can and half in my room. I'm going to work my way down the stairs, as my daughter has a tonne of books, I checked a handful and only found one bug, so I'm being hopeful that her room isn't as bad.

It's been a very distressing time, as I've had to throw memories, and gifts as well as art work, but it has meant I've had a huge clear out, just wish it was under better circumstances.

I'm also washing any laundry that was in the laundry basket that was near items that had bugs on.

So far apart from the one in a book in my daughters room, I have only seen them in mine, ofc they are tiny so I may have missed them but now I find myself staring at everything looking for movement or something that stands out as wrong. It's driving me crazy!

I've checked my books on a shelf that is about 6ft up and out of the 6 I checked none seem to be infected. And my dvd's that are underneath but in a cupboard on the floor also seem to be bug free.

I can only assume I brought them in with an infected book, or picked them up from somewhere after visiting, we recently stayed some place and I took books and paper with me, they could have hitched a lift back, but I have no way of knowing where exactly they came from.

I don't have a bedroom door, but I have sprayed all around the banister and stair case, to hopefully create a raid barrier to stop them going down stairs, though as I've had them this long, if they've wanted to go downstairs, I'm sure they would have. Plus, having to carry infected material down the stairs probably didn't help.

They were mainly at this side of my room, which is where my knitting book and binder where. But it is underneath the window. I did have a giant cardboard box under the window too that my chair came in and couldn't get rid of, a month or so ago I moved it to the other side of the room, and I think that is how they spread over there, but again this is just me guessing.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to explain what I've found and what I have done so far. I've also vacuumed the majority of my bedroom, I can't quite get under the bed until I have some muscles here to help me at the weekend - king sized bed, no where to move it and I'm a pint sized person.

I know to freeze things I want to keep for 24hrs to kill the possible eggs, I've sprayed raid around my room, so much that 2 days later the residual is giving me a tender throat! I think I may be going over the top with the raid!

I can only do so much freezing and washing at a time. But is there anything else I can do to help with this?

Oh, my environment, well, to me my room appears dry and damp free, though there is some wall paper peeling under a corner, but I looked there and saw nothing, and sprayed too just in case. In my room behind some partition board I have a water tank. In summer my room is absolutely boiling hot so I always try to leave a window open even when it rains but I place a towel on the sill to help soak up any rain water so it doesn't do damage, in the winter it's freezing cold.
I've never had this problem before - or at least, I've never noticed this problem before.

Also, I've placed all infected items in bags outsize, should I spray some more raid around the wall and door frame so they don't try coming back inside. Or should I presume that because they are bagged up with food (books and paper)that they'll be as happy as me at an all you can eat chinese buffet?

Dear Rme, I think you should throw away your makeup and lotions and all products associated with this problem. Products and their containers get contaminated. I am so sorry to hear about your bugged out panick attacks and having to rearrange your whole life over these bites. I notice that you bring up bleaching the floors and cleaning alot. It is possible that you have a few ailments going on here. Obviously the lice or mites and possibly a reaction to the constant cleaning chemicals all your life. Since you went so far as to move from your apartment due to the infestation I wonder how you would actually do in a sterile environment free of germs, chemicals and pesticides. Is it possible your apartment was sprayed before you moved in, contact the previous tennant. Maybe you are having an allergic reaction to the pesticides and you keep recontaminating yourself. Were you single? I have a feeling that you are having a bad skin reaction to bleach and chemicals as well as bugs or a similar skin rash and bugs and bleach. The bugs on the plants that killed the plants seem like they would like plants not humans. I think there are some serious problems with that appartment. Good luck.

My house is filled with these tiny flying insects that seldomly bite. They are barely perceptible to the naked?
eye and only when standing next to a light and there is a dark background. They appear colorless sometime black ro grey. I have treated everything using lysol,RAID, bed bug spray, and natural non toxic solutions. I use lysol everyday.
I cannot get rid of them. I have no idea what they are. I can feel them when they get on me and cannot see them unless they get on something dark. Once they are on something they are too small even with a magnifying glass to see what they are. They fly too fast to catch. I have tried all kinds of sprays and can't get rid of them. They are in my clothes. No matter how much I wash they are still in them. They are always on my person. Like I have fleas but they don't bite as much. Has anyone else had this kind of problem and if so how did you get rid of them? WHAT ARE THEY? I'm going crazy with them.
They are worse at night and late afternoon. Professionally cleaning carpets was no help. Washing all my bedding and clothing is a daily requirement just to be able to be in the same house with them. They do not appear to bother most people. Please help.

OK, have put more pics up on the blog. Sorry it's such a mess.

I don't know about the grain beetle you mentioned, get a grip. I'm not responsible for what falls in to my bowls of water or what ends up in my orfices. Perhaps the pictures are not big enough. The bugs are only about 1/16-1/4mm in size, each. As for something not belonging here, last summer my neighbour showed me a giant silk moth that she'd had i.d'd. It had flown in her balcony, in Hamilton, ON. Not 'sposed to be this far north (I think she said Florida was as far north as they were supposed to go), but there it was in all it's 6" wide glory. So as far as I'm concerned, anything is possible.

Looked at your pics. Sorry but it looks like a saw tooth grain beetle which has NONE of the characteristics you mention.Let's get real here..The Canadian nurse told you that you were crazy and you said the Canadian health care system is good. So......well..just a thought.

Well, I've tried to set up a blog...I have NO idea what I'm doing. Geocities was easier but it's going to be disappearing soon, apparantly.
http://bugsrme.blogspot.com/
is me and my bugs. I can't see anything that I thought that I was posting, except the bug from my ear canal that I caught on the inside bit of an ear-plug.
Will keep on trying to figure this blog thing out, as time booked on the library cmoputer permits...

Is there any way to upload images? I have several that are very good, and thought that posting them might be helpful. A head shot, a body shot or two, a lot of shots showing long antennae...etc.

From what I can see, this is a bird mite. I have caught a red speck that is harder to see because it doesn't show up as well as the white ones, but there are a few landmarks (i.e. sphere shapes dotted along the side of the body, I think eight legs, for example) that make me think that it may be a blood engorged bird mite. Since it is white when not full, I fear that I may have an infestation of the kind of bird mite (someone said "Chicken mite") that is really hard to get rid of. I have not heard of anyone actually managing to get rid of an infestation of bird mites, and from what I've read, these little white ones are the toughest of them all.

One of the nasty specimens that I caught was from the inner piece of an ear-plug that I used last night. Theh picture shows a head with two long antennae coming out from it. This thing came from inside my ear canal! I feel just sick...

You guys lost me on post #10. I'm afraid you'll have to find an entomologist. So we ruled out louse how, again? I don't remember what happened between when you solved the problem and when it escalated.

We get no-see-ums in northern and north-central Ontario, but not ususally here in southern Ontario. Really, the profile of the bird mite fits my experience exactly. Likes humidity, likes women (estrogen), tiny, white (I have begun to find small black specks on my bites, too; maybe more than one type of infestation?) comes out at dusk, can get to you by waiting on countertops and other objects, bites cats and humans, infests balconies. These are not the only behaviour matches that make me feel that I have bird mites, there are more. I spoke to a couple of Pest Control companies today: they say that no bird mite behaves as my bugs behave. Then again, they also said that no body louse behaves that way, either. They have their training and education, and feel that anything that falls outside of that doesn't exist. Or so they say.

I have bought a Celestron digital microscope. With the digital zoom I can get up to 1600x magnification. I was only able to see a basic outline of the sample that had already been identified by the taxonomist, when I tested it at the store. I'm hoping that with a bit of manual reading, I can get a better visual and take a picture of what's on the screen (it has a built-in "Snap" function and memory). I am getting quite sick and desperate so I hope that the microscope helps me turn up good samples to send to a qualified entomologist.

Has anyone ever gotten rid of these things?
