Good Morning!! I had cicada killers in my front yard right in front of my porch (probably about 50 of them flying around the 'worst' year. My husband began putting down the four times a year Scott's lawn treatment, which includes a grub killer, and by the second summer (last summer) they were substantially reduced and this year I only saw one mound. So if you find a grub killer and put it down the holes to kill the egg/grub, you should see a reduction. And it really is true that they are not interested in you or your pets, but they are pretty scary looking!

So that's 3.. well I think you'll have to take corrective action soon or next year it will become a problem.

Don't forget that she kills a cicada..puts it down in the hole..lays her egg on it so next year..guess what!? Yep another bee. This may be just one female as they will dig one hole for one egg. I bet your yard has bare spots. If so you need to re seed them to discourage the behavior. You may have to put something like Sevin dust in the holes to kill the larvae. Oh, they eat whatever they want, mostly insects. But if they were in my yard and wanted a double cheeseburger and fries I'd give it to 'em!!

thanks for the link! This confirms it,Cicada Killer Wasp. The mounds came up about 4 days ago and every morning there is fresh dirt and markings ( impressions).Today I turned the hose on and washed the mounds away. Will see what comes up in the morning.Yes I have seen them flying, almost like humming birds. My one neighbor has 3 mounds and entrance holes. Don't know about any one else.I did contact the N.C. extension office but as of today no responce. If they are beneficial, and I'm sure the are, what do they eat? Maybe the japanese beatles and june bugs? We had very few of either one this year. Will keep you posted.

That's true. Have you thought about contacting your local extension office and having someone come out to look at the mystery mounds? I'd correct the spelling of the title of this thread, but Mistery sounds like such a manly word.

Hey Christa..while Jonathon is walking around the park ( checking out the summer dresses I bet)let me remind you these guys are beneficial. The male does not sting and the female will only sting if you really ask for it. Don't ask.

Oh boy! Cicada killers. Fancy you should mention these, Christa, because I was just in the park the other day and I saw these gigantic wasps flying around. I'd never seen one before. Simply amazing. So, while I was looking up Cicada Killers for you I noticed that these were the creatures I was talking about. Did these mystery mounds pop up just recently? Do your neighbors have them? Have you seen any abnormally large wasps buzzing about your garden?

Here's the link I found about them: http://saltthesandbox.org/cicada_hunt/CicadaKillers.htm

I have been checking the web and I think they could be cicada killers.Tell me how to send pics to you and I will. The size is like a breakfast plate and the hole is about 1 inch .The bee size must be fairly large because the indentation in the coarse dirt is about 1 1/2 inch wide and maybe 1/2 inch deep.My neighbor has not had this problem at all until now.
I guess the bees like me because I'm so sweet!?
Also I have noticed that we had very few June bugs this year, and where are the japanese beetles?( not that I miss both!)We normaly have an over abundance.

It sounds like some sort of solitary wasp. What is it with you and bees? Are they getting even for something you did a long time ago? Have you seen any big 3 in long
reddish guys zipping around the yard? Let us know what size "plate" and what size hole.
Also I wonder if the neighbor may have had this problem for a few years and they are just beginning to come over to your house. J you on this ?

I found 2 very mysteries mounds in my yard. How can I send pictures to you for viewing? The mounds are of very corse granules, and are about 2 inches high and the size of a plate. There is a indentation in the dirt at the entrance hole.It looks like something crawled out of it.Could it be a hornet nest? My neighbor has the same thing.
Please let me know where and how I can send pictures to you.
Thank you,
