Dear Doucediva, This is very interesting to me. Why don't you catch some in your house and take them to a local college lab or get a cheapo microscope. It sounds like a baby fruitfly or similar.

My house is filled with these tiny flying insects that seldomly bite. They are barely perceptible to the naked?
eye and only when standing next to a light and there is a dark background. They appear colorless sometime black ro grey. I have treated everything using lysol,RAID, bed bug spray, and natural non toxic solutions. I use lysol everyday.
I cannot get rid of them. I have no idea what they are. I can feel them when they get on me and cannot see them unless they get on something dark. Once they are on something they are too small even with a magnifying glass to see what they are. They fly too fast to catch. I have tried all kinds of sprays and can't get rid of them. They are in my clothes. No matter how much I wash they are still in them. They are always on my person. Like I have fleas but they don't bite as much. Has anyone else had this kind of problem and if so how did you get rid of them? WHAT ARE THEY? I'm going crazy with them.
They are worse at night and late afternoon. Professionally cleaning carpets was no help. Washing all my bedding and clothing is a daily requirement just to be able to be in the same house with them. They do not appear to bother most people. Please help.

I agree with that, too, but I've been so busy emptying my fridge that I haven't had time to give any thoughtful responses. That's not true, actually. I get a lot of emails these days from people looking for advice who (I guess) don't do the forum thing. Just spent half an hour researching this BruiseMD stuff.

I don't think it is fleas, has to be some type of tiny mites. I feel the itching and crawling especially at dawn. The only thing that has worked for me is powdering my bed with Hartz flea and tick powder for cats. If I don't do it when I feel this, I won't be able to sleep well after 3 o 4 a.m.

Hi! Thanks for your suggestions! I went ahead and researched Powder Post beetles. There is definitely lots of Frass. However there are no exit pinholes. I have had the chest for 8 to 10 years. My research indicated the adult Powder Post beetles would have exited by now. Also, I have not noted any recent powder residue.

Can you think of any similar wood-consuming insects typically found in old asian wood?

The fumigation method was also mentioned in my research. I am sure this would be the ideal approach to take, but I live in a very small town and can not afford the price that you mentioned for treatment.

We do have an exterminator who does termite and carpenter ant treatments on the house (we are in louisiana). Could he spray the drawer? Perhaps then I could leave it in the sun for a few days and then apply several coats of varnish? Forgive me if this sounds like a tragically flawed idea.

Open for more suggestions. Thanks to all!

I think what you have may be powder post beetles. If you look closely and find tiny pin holes in the wood these are "exit" holes. So the larvae has eaten it's way out and become an adult. The whitish stuff we call frass. If it's dark then the infestation is older as it looks whiter the newer the problem. The chest is ok because it's probably varnished or painted where the drawer is not. I used to be with a firm that fumigated artifacts from the Smithsonian using a fumigation chamber. If you're in the UK or Canada contact Rent a Kill. A fumigation chamber will kill any thing inside the wood. They may want to wait until they have enough articles to treat together or the cost of doing just the drawer would be extreme. Figure on $125 for your one item. Up to $5000 for the entire chamber.

Over the years I have purchased several asian antiques: benches, chests, bookcases and the like. I was aware that some times tiny (perhaps invisible to the human eye?) insects occasionally are inside the furniture and you may not be aware at the time of purchase. I have had one peice for a few years and early on, in the inside seam of a drawer appeared tiny deposits of sawdust. Theres a sort of whiteish stain as well. I removed the drawer from the chest and the chest has remained intact, but I wish to treat the sad drawer once and for all to reunite it with the larger peice.

I've tried to identify the pest with the help of internet but most articles refer to such infestations as being from termites or beetles. But what species? And how can they be treated? These insects transform the wood into soft, dry, fibrous mash.

Please someone, help! I know there is a treatment used by shop-keepers in america but the store where I made purchases closed down years ago. I purchased the infested peice on ebay directly from an overseas shipper.

You know, if it makes Rid sound any better (and I don't know if it does), Rid actually uses a plant extract known as Pyrethrum, rather than synthetic insecticides. So, I guess you could say it's kind of organic. Of course, there are a couple of other ingredients. But what paxton is saying is something I might say. However, there is a difference between body lice and crabs.

There are three kinds of lice: head lice, body lice, and pubic lice. Keep that in mind when you are attempting to solve this problem.

I had a problem several years ago with body lice ( crabs ) . I used Rid-X and it works. It may burn a little and you have to leave it on for a while before rinsing off but it is worth the trouble and expense. Remember you also need to treat you entire home. Floors, furniture and bedding. Don't be afraid to ask the pharmacist about products for control of lice. Also note if you live in a apartment it is the managers duty to get the apartment treated. If they refuse call the health dept. in your area. they will help you.

Yes, unfortunately, Loviatar is right in my case.
I have just come to the conclusion, about 2-3 weeks ago, that I am the victim of mites.
I am pretty sure that I have scabies, which is the human mite, although it is possible that they could be rodent mites or bird mites...
I have tried to address this logically, and going from one hypothesis to another, have arrived at this latest theory.
I can find relief with different products, and being careful of my clothing, bedding, especially carpets, etc. A previous tenant in my rental house stated that the guy who lived here before me had some kind of mite. Ear mites in cats he said, however this is wrong, it is some other kind of mite.
Barbnina's case sounds only too familiar as well. I would consider this condition strongly. It has been my experience that these critters are somewhat host specific. Reading a lot of online posts on the subject, a lot of times a parent and a child will get this condition, however the other parents and numerous children will not develop these symptoms. We are the lucky ones I guess.
The absolute best and cheapest remedies have been Borax laundry booster and Epson salt. Wash clothing in Borax, sprinkle on carpets as well. It takes 2 days in carpets before it starts to work, and is completely safe to humans. The FDA recently rose the safe intake that humans can consume (Don't consume ANY, this just says how safe the natural Borax mineral is) Epson salt is the best skin remedy. Take a shower, afterwards mix 50 percent epson salt, 50 percent water and rub on skin, allow to air dry or blow dry is even better. Your skin turns bright white b/c the water evaporates and leaves the salt covering your skin. It feels weird having the salt on your skin... really dry, but when you rub it off, your skin is soft underneath. Many people soak tired feet or warts in epson salt. If the mites are extremely bad, sleep with the salt on your skin. It rubs off onto the bed which is annoying but the little buggers dry up right away and it heals all bite marks on you.
I joined the forum http://www.topix.com/forum/health/scabies and they have great advice from many sufferers. The CDC considers this to be a STD since it can be transmitted with close encounters, including sleeping in the same bed. This is actually good news because you can goto a free clinic, like planned parenthood to have this diagnosed. Actually, I'm sure that the low end places see many more cases of this and are able to easily diagnose it, whereas a hospital or general doctor might think your crazy and be unable to diagnose it, even though it usually only involves a general skin scraping.
Sorry for the long post, hope that this helps people out there with similar conditions. I think I'm going to go join Loviatar's site now.
Best Wishes everyone and don't go spreading it around if you have it, and don't despair.

I recommend considering rodent or bird mites. You can often feel the crawling, stinging bites, and a large variety of bite marks (vesicular papules--like zits--bumps like from mosquitos, red holes like a pin prick, a clear blister with a red splotch around it that itches etc.). Most of the literature from public informatives underestimates the discomfort from these mites and the persistence of these mites and often recommend ineffective solutions. I recommend trying to find a host; mice, rats, birds, bats, racoons, squirrel nests. Also, take steps to control the mites. I recommend googling "birdmites" and click on my username at the top of this post.

I'm being bitten on my thighs, butt cheeks, and calves. I never see what bites me. There are itchy bumps that are skin colored and that seem to cluster--i.e. never just one bump. My husband does not ever get bitten. I can't take it anymore! I've read lots of different possibilities and ideas for identifying but does my situation sound familiar to anyone? Anything that could help me narrow down the possibilities would be great. Oh, I think they're in my clothes too. I get bitten mostly in bed, but other places in the house as well.

I have a similar condition/problem...
I moved into a new apartment, started getting this crawling sensation all the time, then biting, and now itching as well. I thought it was fleas too. Previous occupant had 3 dogs, a cat, a rodent of some kind. And now that's it's winter the place has mice as well. Treated it for a few weeks, only got worse. Now I know it's not fleas!

A trick to tell if it IS fleas. Drag your white socks across the carpet. They should come up as red, darker patches. I heard that fleas can be dormant for up to a year and a half. Another trick: use a small light/ reading lamp. Put it above the floor about a foot at night when no other lights around. Under the light put a small dish of cooking oil (water doesn't work as well). In the mourning, you'll see them stuck in the top of it.

Another possibility: mites. These guys are small, can't be seen. Many types, common biters are scabies which is a human condition. They burrow in your skin causing itchiness. They tend to really like in between your fingers a lot and joints like elbows, behind knees etc. Other mites are bird mites and rodent mites (two types) they can feed off of humans when host animal is absent. However, I find that they can not reproduce off of humans. The trick is to get rid of host animals. Bird Nests, Mice, Pigeons, Squirrals, et cetera.
One trick to tell if it's mites is to put a piece of black construction paper on the carpet, vertically if possible. They will climb up it and wait at the top to grab onto something / someone. Use a light and mangifying glass to check, usually they are white and you can see them against the black.

I am now fairly convinced that I have body lice! They are horrible! Can't get rid of them! Been over a month. After doing much research and ruling out everything else, I've come to that conclusion. I thought they were fleas, jumping at first. But now I know they like to crawl. I think the tiny, tiny ones can jump / fly due to static / changes in static vs. enviroment. They pop up and land by static attraction I think. I was wondering if I was going crazy at first, but now I know I'm infested. This is very rare in the united states... they say. I identified were I picked them up at. Local laundrymat... large somalian population washes their clothes there, and I must have got them from using cold water. I saw the buggers there after I found out what to look for. Somalia = war torn / over-crowded = lice infested.
These guys live in your clothes... they say... but really they live all over your stuff and on the floor, carpet, etc. I now sleep on a cot in my kitchen, all other rooms closed, wash my clothes everyday, put them in plastic bags, and take like 3-4 showers. It sucks, still can't get rid of them. My apartment keeps reinvesting me. Got 100% free, bought new set of clothes, went to parents for Thanksgiving, had no problems there. Came back, and SLAM... Instant misery. Sleep like 2-4 hours at a time.

I really hope you don't have them! The internet does not have very much info on them and it's of very low quality. You can find them on your clothing sometimes, depends on the color of clothing. Lice are very small < 3 mm (a dime width is 1 mm). They are usually little white specks, oval. Showers are the best treatment. You need to wash clothing above 130 degrees. Local laundrymats don't get the hot, so I'm screwed. Plus I'm in MN so I can't wash my jacket, hat, etc everyday. I'm in college so I don't have the time to properly fight this. Winter break will be here soon, plus I ordered some safe chemical alternatives off the net. They say use Lice shampoos but you can't for all over your body, they burn too bad, and don't do shit.
What helps me is I like to boil my socks, boxers. Iron everything else. Wash bedding everyday. (sleep on a cot with a blanket) Get drunk, forget about them and pass out :)

My newest remedy: Bought some organic Tea Tree Shampoo (Jason Brand) They hate it! I put it on and they start biting me all over (agony) before they die / fall off. It's really good for your skin / dry skin. Australian indigenous people use it all the time. It's one of the very few natural anti-parasite items! Also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal. Otherwise Neem Oil is good.

They really like your feet, socks, legs, thighs, and back. Don't know if that sounds familar or not.

I've kinda become an expert on these things since my life now sucks.
Hope this post helps.

So, you can't actually see the bugs that are biting you? But you can feel them jumping around? You might want to check out something called Morgellon's syndrome/disease. Otherwise, if you're treating for fleas, you're doing all the right things--if to excess, which worries me. Spraying all of that stuff around your house, whether it's "natural" or not may not be your best option. I would look further into identifying your problem first.

I would also seriously look into seeing a doctor to help identify what it is that's causing your symptoms. If they can confirm that it is in fact bug bites, then you can rule out Morgellons. I don't know what else to tell you. Has anyone had similar issues with unidentified bug infestations that can't be seen?

Recently moved into a new apartment. Started scratching strongly a week or so ago, and getting bitten all over my body both when sleeping and when walking around. I can feel things both crawling and jumping around, but can't see them. When I walked into my bedroom, I could feel insects jumping around on me. The interesting thing is that I don't have a pet, and according to my landlord there has never been an animal in the apartment ever. I do spend time outside on a flagstone patio, and there are wild animals that are known to visit there.

Soooooo....I'm treating it as a flea infestation, even though I don't know if it's fleas or not. Started with Sentry Defense, which seemed to do very little, moved to DeFlea, which seemed to have an impact. Now spraying fabrics with a commercial orange peel extract, spraying myself with essential oils (eucalyptus & orange), and treating my carpet with salt and borax.

Trying to use less toxic stuff, not sure I'm thinking clearly as I haven't slept more than 2 hrs in the last week. Are there other types of insect this could be? Is there a way to treat for a variety of insects at the same time? Any insights here would be welcome.
