I went four months without being able to use my tub, fridge was broken from day one... Its hard, but I fought and I am still fighting. Just as you, I lived in a privately owned, HUD subsidized building. That makes things BETTER for you. We are going to court for the eighth time and because the private owner own alot (as a matter of fact, one of the private owners is in hot water right now in the US Senate, so it kinda shows that I can't get an attorney!) Here's what you do: 1. Keep everything in writing to your landlord and if the land lord says something, but will not put it in writing, write it down your self and send a copy to your land lord to "confirm our conversation on _______ date" 2. Get a copy of your States Landlord and Tenant rules and a copy of the Federal Landlord and Tenant Rules. READ THEM 3. If you are not able to resolve your issues with your land lord after reading what your rights and obligations are and what the land lords obligations are (remember to keep everything in writing and keep copies) then go the next step. 4. There are many agencies that that hud has for you to go to, the Department of Justice is one that has several areas of help. You also have a right to file a complaint with Fair Housing and cannot be retaliated for doing this either. Just keep in mind that you do not go through the state for help--you get to go directly to the top in Washington DC and they tend to take things a little more serious than a state office. There is also an agency called R.E.A.C. which is a government agency run by private individuals who will go to your apartment complex and verify all the rents are correct, the tenant to size ratio is correct, all repairs are done and this is an important one: You are to receive all notices from your land lord personally, not tacked to a door, pasted on a wall, but placed into your hand by your land lord or send to you through a manner that can be proven you received the notice. Good luck. If you are able to find another place that you would be happy with and can afford to make the move (both financially and physically) that would be the least difficulty on you. There were activities & social things like going out to lunch [went on 1 of them], then after people started to know me things changed. Things went dark, & the landlord would turn the lights on + open the blinds, then on the day I happen to be around & there are other tenants in the hall, things go dark. [NOTE: only 2 people moved in here in June, some man & I. He moved in @ the start of June & I in the middle. But things were ok until I moved in [We told this management agencies boss [new agency, the first one left because they wanted to control us & think we should not be alone. This place is an independent living place with 24 tenants [1 to each apt], also the first agency was nasty towards me too.] When I put in work orders in, the landlord either does nothing or when he does decide to do something he gives me an attitude make threats. This last time dad told me to put on the work order [freezer started to go out - warm] 'you will be charged', so a few days later this woman from this agency told me that this is harassment. So any advice? My dad is 83 & tired of all of this [it seems like my type of disability [unknown in the brain] is messing things up for me], & I think that I should not have to put up with the landlords threats or management not doing anything. So dad told me last week that he will call the management people [he called the office in the building & left a recorded message, but bet the landlord hit [erase] on the machine. People can be so rude & nasty towards someone & that someone [like me] did nothing to ask for it. I am on hyper pills to clam me down [dad gets me upset too, so this is why the pills. I was on them for a while, back in the 90's. But they made me sick so bad I had to go to the hospital, so I threw them out [yuck]. But right now these pills [Xanax] seem to do better then the others did, I fussed for a while because it seems like when your so called 'handicap' the first thing that is done is being put on pills. But these pills are calming me down, but how do I stop the stress? I also have my hobbies, but see living in places like I do means, Inspections - first place I lived in they were once a year second place [before here] they were the same the place I am now they change them, one year we had 4 inspections. This place is privately owned by this church next-door & the do their own inspections [missed last years]. Sometimes the county comes & HUD. The lease says we are to get notices but they do not give them out, so one time I told this woman from the agency & they did put notices out for a while. But they seemed to stop again, it is like people do not seem to care about the tenants in here. The first place I was in [for 20 years] were nice, the 2nd place was so called 'normal' high rent [$950 a month] but they did not charge me for a security deposit. So I just have to live with what happens, I am 53 & already got in to medical problems because of it. My doctor told me just to walk away, & this one time I did just that. So want to know if I should tell dad I want to move or not? I do want to move, but fining housing for me is not easy. So please pray for me. Thanks & God bless. ;-)
