Nope..my tank is outside but I do hose off the turret and treads when they get muddy and I only use it to scare the neighbors. Oh you mean that thing (square) behind the thing I pee in? What's in there? It has a top.

"...Bats are extremely important. Yet due to years of unwarranted human fear and persecution, bats are in alarming decline. By putting up a bat house you are helping by giving them a home. You will also benefit from having fewer yard and garden pests, and will enjoy learning about bats and sharing your knowledge with friends and family.

As the primary predators of night-flying insects, bats play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. And, as consumers of vast numbers of pests, they rank among humanity’s most valuable allies. A single little brown bat can catch hundreds of mosquito-sized insects an hour, and a typical colony of big brown bats can protect local farmers from the costly attacks of 18 million root-worms each summer..."

The above is from http://www.batconservation.org/content/Bathouseimportance.html I do have literature that does state 20,000 mosqitoes a night, but you know am not able to find right away!

Grip--you're not an idiot! Yes, Alaska is a state, but you would be surprised at the limited resources. yes, we do have a Department of Agriculture, sorta. NO, there is not a Health Department of any kind.

As for controlling mosquitoes, it is not done here. I had a place in Marathon Florida in the Keys and there was/is insect control there; they spray from a trck at night. Miathalon was used, but I do not know if that is what is still being sprayed (spraying is done by Key Colony Beach)

As for my wonderful dog peeing on your bathroom floor--she won't, If I lock the door to the back yard, she cannot open it (just learned to open doors), so if I am unable to get out of bed to let her out, she will go in the bathtub. She came from the same sled lot that the dogs who got loose in my home, but she is my service dog, same as my previous sled dog!

So, as long as you aim to please, you should have a urine free floor. By the way, when you clean your toilets, do you clean the tank as well? Hope so!

Please forgive me I'm just an idiot but does Alaska have a Dept Of Agriculture? I heard it became a state. Is there a Public Health Dept? Just asking..please don't send your dog sled friend over to piss on my bathroom floor I just cleaned it.

20,000 mosquitoes in one night? That sounds like an exaggeration. Most literature I've read says that harboring bats is useful, but their effect on the general population of pestiferous insects is negligible. This, however, is literature, as opposed to experience or anecdotal evidence, which apparently you have. Have you really noticed a marked improvement in the mosquito population in your area?

Before I suggest using bats for pest control, I would suggest BTi cakes. Have you heard about BTi's, Maggie? I would be interested to know how that works in a community driven mosquito control program.

You have some work cut out for you. ;-)

In the winter, the bats get cabin fever, get drunk and shoot a few relatives, just like the rest of the Alaskans.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure the bats hibernate and at -40 degrees, we don't have to worry too much about the mosquitoes. Once you have experienced going outside and not be able to open you mouth or eyes because the mosquitoes are so thick it is like walking in a storm of bugs, you will appreciate any help at getting rid of them. This case is common, but only in certain low marshy areas and I have had to go through it more than once.

No, we do not have heartworm.
No, we do not get encephalitis

Strange huh?

I built the bat house (search "bat house" for sales and many blueprints). I saw one and since I like unique things, I looked up how to build one and found that it serves a real purpose.

Very good advice...ummmmm mosquitoes.Sounds like you had bats.Did you build a shelter? When you sold the house was that an upgrade? Most people think bats are all rabid or just scary but they serve a purpose in ol Mom Nature's plan. and as we all know..Don't mess with Mother Nature!!

Count your blessings!!!
Use the bat to your advantage!

Buy or build a Bat House. Attach it to the east side of your house, garage, or any sturdy object that has a clear and unobstructive path to the bat house. Place the bat house high enough so other critters cannot jump, climb or get at the house, and in a spot where droppings will cause an immediate problem.

1. The bat should move in, along with other bats.
2. Guano is great fertilizer.
3. One bat will eat over 20,000 mosquitoes in one night.

If you are creeped out by the bat or still want to rid your area of it, then once it relocates to its new home, you can always cover the opening and...

It is still thers. I don't mind the bat just not the guano on my front step. I tried hanging moth balls. It stinks but the bat still comes back. I'll take a look at the atic, I don't usually go up there. I'll try the enzyme cleaner.

Getagrip is right. Try cleaning the porch with an enzymatic cleaner. Some people call it pet odor spray. Enzymes will break down the organic matter, making the smell go away. Again, watch for bats coming in and out of your attic. One bat hanging around is no big deal, but it might not be the same bat, in which case you may be dealing with a bigger infestation.

Turning the light off is more effective than turning it on. Turning the light on attracts more bugs, which is what your little brown friend is hanging around for. So long as it's not in your house, I would go ahead and ignore the bat.

First of all you need to go outside at dusk and watch your roofline for bats leaving your attic. If you have none then your friend is just"hanging out" to digest her catch. Hose off the floor of your porch to remove any bat droppings (they smell em and are attracted)also if dryed they may contain histoplasmosis if inhaled..and leave the light off (it attracts the bugs the bats like to eat) Chances are she's a common brown bat it's harmless.

I have a bat that likes to hang out under my front porch roof. I can make it go away for a few days by spraying water near it but it comes back. Leaving the light on doesn't take care of it. Any ideas?
