May sound like a stupid question, but I have two indoor cats, both were feral but checked out by vets for over 3 years. One I brought to the vet last week because he was scooting on the rug and his anus was red. He got treated for tapeworm and seems fine but my other cat now does the same thing which I will bring to vet after Christmas holiday. Perhaps they could have had the tapeworm for a long long time, but they have been only indoors for 3 years and I don't have fleas in my apartment. I've noticed a couple of cockroaches which I use a natural spray for. Could they ingest cockroaches which would leave larvae in the intestine like fleas which could grow into a tapeworm???? I can't find any reference to this but it was just a thought. Once in a while I have them, lol.

Tapeworms are actually a completely separate organism from fleas, cockroaches, or any other insect. They are transmitted primarily through feces or by eating raw or undercooked meat or freshwater fish, which a couple of feral cats would probably have done on a regular basis. I bet your cats were living with the tapeworms for a long time...and since you've been cleaning their litter box for the past 3 years, you might want to get yourself checked for a tapeworm, too.

To remove a tape worm from animals and humans, you must withold all food and give only minimal liquids for 3 to 4 days. Then you boil some milk and do not let it cool, you want it to be steaming. Finally, you hold the boiling milk in front of the nose and mouth of the animal or person and have them inhale deaply through both. Have the inhaling decrease to just light whiffs; use more boiling milk if the first bowl no longer is steaming. Repeat until tape worm exits the nose to get the milk, cuz you have starved it for days.

not knowing much about seeking advice through the computor world hopefully someone out there will help me,i have a german shepherd "madox" he's a lovely dog but does my head in leaping into a neighbours garden,i fought my way through trees trying to capture him only to find him hovering over a dead fox................ now he seems to have fleas...............what is a good dry if poss way to get rid of them,the reason i say dry we have had bad snow and after bathing him i cant leave him outside......

Hmmm! You keep Madox outside all the time? He is not allowed inside, even long enough for a good bath and to dry off before you return him outside to return to a Pupcicle, in the snow and cold? Well, at least it sounds like you don't keep him on a short chain or in a pen to be isolated and lonely by not being able to visit other mammals in you neighborhood. There is one solution I can think of, but it may not be admissable or legal on the internet for me to share with you. By the way, when you took him to the vet for an antibiotic treatment, after playing with a dead animal, did he recommed anything for fleas?

Umm.. this thread went from cats with tapeworm to dogs with fleas, is it my imagination or the Twilight Zone? Lesleyanne...sweetie...did your darling dog kill the fox? If so..his attitude just might be a little different towards humans and other dogs..What's MR got to say about that? Also..common fact that fleas will leave one dead host for another.MR?

Maggie did not change the subject, as you imply by by your pitiful attack of her in this forum.1. she would be disturbed at the aggression, especialy in a remark that does not make sense and since she did not reply herself, chose to ignore the humorless, and far from "lightened up" attitude you toss around
2. because she had a dog who was seriously allergic to fleas, she knows fleas DO NOT live on the host animal-dead or live. They get on the animal to feed and live mostly in carpets, curtains, and other fibers; plus...you don't just treat the animal
3. ironic you chose your rant or venting towards Maggie to include a fox; Maggie BEGAN THE SERIES FOR RABIES SHOTS TWO WEEKS AGO TODAY, BECAUSE OF A RABID FOX--as you know, she is no longer getting the shots
4. g.a.g. try to learn something new everyday, how about learn by example; see #4 above--read all she wrote, not just her silly remedy for getting rid of a tapeworm, but all she wrote
