I have discovered to my horror that we may have bedbugs- ick! does anyone know how long the little devils can live without a human host? can cats (indoor) get them or carry them? - how do I get rid of them and how do I treat the bites (they seem to have become infected) ?
Bedbugs have become a serious problem in the last few years. The pest control industry is making a "killing" pun intended on this new market. As for your questions well..depends on which "expert" you listen to.
#1 I have heard "years" and one year.
#2 Not that I have seen or read.
#3 Wash all bedding. Inspect the box spring and matteras with a flashlight .Vaccuum all seams and underneath. Check wall outlets and light switches and look for any dead insects .There are several insecticides on the market so do your research.
#4 You need to contact your doctor on that one.
As you can see this is a very complex situation that cannot be answered quickly I strongly urge you to contact a pest company and your doctor since each situation is different.
you can prevent bed bugs from crawling onto a bed, pull the bed frame away from the wall, tuck sheets and blankets so they won't contact the floor, and place the frame legs into dishes or cups of mineral oil.
travelguide offers good advice. This is true: keeping as much fabric from contacting the floor and walls will prevent the possible migration of bed bugs from adjacent areas to your bed.

Bed bugs cannot survive any area with temperature of below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. However, any attempt to kill bed bugs by chilling a room has a low chance of success, as the cold temperature should be maintained for at least two weeks. Bed bugs can live for many days without food . They may even live for a year or two.
Travel knows his bed bugs! Some people say to get rid of all your bedding but thats not always needed. In apartment complexes I have seen people go out to the dumpster and retrieve a matteras someone has thrown out...don't do that!
What's a matteras?
Dumping the matress is not a solution to the bedbugs. We have to call for PCO and get things clear. We ahave to contact experts who do this like www.bedbugbreau.com who can give us the idea of how to get rid of the bugs without making much expense in renovation and throwing away furniture and matress.
LOL a matteras is uh..a mattress with a southern accent! It's good to call a pro, just be sure to get more than one opinion.
I have only seen one or two bugs and no sign (so far) of infestation. Do they come in through windows? I would also like to get rid of them before they become a problem. Any inexpensive suggestions?

If you live in a multi unit building the neighbors may have a problem and you are just now beginning to see it. Two bugs can be a problem even if they're not in love they may be lonely and then "BAM" ....YOU have a problem..Strip the bedding and check your materas around the seams..just to be safe vacuum those areas, also check wall plates
( light switches and elec outlets..they screw off) if you have any signs you should treat with a pesticide.
HAH! I would check the materas seams for hot and lonely bed bugs as well. Don't vacuum those areas first. Check them and then vacuum. And getagrip is right to tell you to check fixtures and such near your bed. Bed bugs will hide just about anywhere. I've seen pictures of blood spots on ceilings before.
Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to go barf. I f-ing hate bed bugs.

Steam clean the bedroom. This sounds crazy, but it will work. Bedbugs don't like the temperature of the steam. It will kill them and their eggs. You will need to treat all areas of the mattress and other places where the bedbugs are hiding. Make sure to get into the seams of the mattress. Any deep recesses where bedbugs will hide must be treated carefully. This is an integrated approach to pest control. Remove all pictures from the walls and treat the frames and any bedbugs seen on the walls. Concentrate on the liner at the bottom of the box spring. Rip it off and dispose of it in a plastic bag. Bedbugs will cluster together in a hiding spot. They will spend as much time as they can closest to the host...mainly whoever is occupying that bed~ YOU!
