Enough to cover the entirety of the inside of your dog's ears. This can be done with you thumb. I would say three to four drops for a medium/large dog. Let the mineral oil sit for a while and loosen the debris/exudate, and then clean them out with a cotton ball.
Medicated ear mite treatments aren't necessarily bad. In fact, they're good if you think your pet is suffering from a secondary infection caused by your pet scratching the irritated area. Infections are bad. Medicine is good. But if you're just trying to keep your pet's ears clean, I would go with mineral oil and cotton balls.
Note: don't use Q-tips. The chances of you slipping and doing more damage to the ear are greater with a Q-tip.
how often do you half to do this?
That all depends on how often your cat's/dog's ears build up. If I were going to put a rough estimate down, I'd say once every 2 weeks or once a month. But if you notice your pet scratching their ears a lot or shaking their head, it's probably a sign that something needs to be done sooner than later.

Thanks for the information Johnthan.
hi there guys! I am currently doing a tiny research on the net about ear mites because our cat is severely infected with this. Yes she does that scratching and shaking of head, and the brown-black specks are present in her left ear. It was only now that I realized that I must look for home remedies for this disease. My problem is I cannot decide which of the remedies presented is the best for my cat. Her left ear is now half of its size as that part of skin had progressively turned dead in the form of wound, and I know soon it will reach her middle ear. What do you think is the best solution for this? Is mineral oil enough to cure this?
Hi, hope its okay I reply cuz I am not a guy! :p I know this may be a dumb thing to ask, but have you taken the cat to at least more than one vet? There is so many things that most people do not think about when the ear is a problem. It sounds like you have you hands full. What have you used so far? Do you clean the ear? With what and how often? When you refer to a wound, is it from the 'mites' only or from another cause or combination of things. I definitely won't give any suggestions without knowing what you have tried and other information. If you can reply quickly, there are many people who can give you input or pass on thier remedies for your pet.
hi maggierose!
so, it's like this, umm, no specific remedies were tried yet, (although I tried putting a few drops of povidone-iodine before)..because I want the first step to be a sure move that it will do good than harm. That is why I am asking which one is the first step, considering that it is NOT on the early stage. This is really my first time to search on the net. My aunt really wants to be bring her (our cat) to the vet but her schedule is tight. So now I am hoping to find home remedies that are tested to be effective, or at least receive suggestions from experts or anyone who can help me about this. Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your reply. :)
The wounds were caused primarily by the ear mites, but is aggravated by her scratching. I tried applying a few drops of povidone-iodine (Betadine) for 5 consecutive days before, but it seemed ineffective. Moreover, I want a specific drug or chemical for ear mites...thanks again maggierose!:)
Your name is interesting. I usta have a rabbit named Bun-Bun. As for the cats ear, it may be best to wait until Monday when others have had a chance to read you request. Because of the possibility of infection, my first advice would be to take the cat to a vet for a good exam. I have never had an animal with as bad a case of ear mites as you are describing. I did have a dog with horrible ear problems made worse by a vets manner for treatment, but in every other instance she did a wonderful job. I do know of a mixture, but feel better letting a few others jump in with advise. I live in the middle of no where, we dont even have a K-Mart, but we do have vets that keep later hours and one very expensive emergency-open-all-night vet. Maybe you could see what is in your area by using your search engine with: "vetrinarian city state" for you search and then see if there is a vet with hours to meet your aunts schedule. Also think about asking the vet if there are any organizations that help with some of the cost for treating the cat.
Please dont get youe hopes up for a first time treatment that will work, as you indicated in #8. It sounds like the ear needs alot of attention and the isnt any miracles with pets! Don't lose hope though.

You can get something from a drugstore called tincture of benzoine which works better to kill the ear mites.
The article on this site about getting rid of ear mites by using mineral oil is nothing but nonsense. I put mineral oil in my cats' ears for weeks, and it did not get rid of the mites. The article says to put the oil in the cat's ears for 6-7 days, yet mites have a 3-week reproduction cycle, so 6-7 days of oil couldn't possibly kill them all.
The mineral oil isn't meant to kill the ear mites. It's meant to clean your cats ears safely. If you read the entire article you'd understand that getting rid of ear mites for good is almost impossible. It's a matter of management once your pets have been exposed.

Jonathan
