Here is an article that covers fleas in the yard too. The author Laura suggest either cedar chips or a product called flea away.

Do you have a pet? Do you like to walk around in the yard? If you do then a treatment is warranted, if not my two favorites are Miller and Bud. Sit on the deck and let Mother Nature take care of the fleas. After all it's her job and she does it better than you ever could.
******Don't forget the cut up flea collar in the vacuum bag to kill what you suck up when you bring the bugs inside.****** Then I'd go with the Bud. It'll kill off alot of things, save the Miller for yourself. If you have what we (when in Mid-West) call dog fleas, they don't usually bother humans, but those sand fleas will chew you up. If this wasn't a 'green' website, I would suggest the lawn strength of Miatholon or Diazanon, on the grass. Then enjoy the Millers.
I posted this on another spot here. The best and safest thing to use is Dawn the blue dish soap. I had a dog and cat and spent so much on sprays and stuff and it only made my pets sick and all the fleas stayed.
Wash the animals in it put a few drops in a bug sprayer that you fill with water for the yard spray and let it rip on the grass and trees. Do this every week till you notice no fleas. I kept doing it forever as I live in Florida and the fleas were awful.
Plus it works on the fruit trees and bugs in the grass and it's cheap and wonderful answer to smelly sprays. Good luck to you!
