We've had problems with moles for years. Tried the mole chasers, poison peanuts, spreading the lawn with foul smelling products and moth balls to deter them, everything, to no avail. Our lawn service suggested the following: use mousetraps to kill moles. It works very simply: moles are rodents, so treat them as such. Where you find a molehill or tunnel, dig out an opening. Using a small piece of pepperoni or hard salami as bait, place a mousetrap at the opening. Cover the hole and trap with an inverted shoe box to keep area darkened.
I have used this method and trapped 12 moles in the last 3 weeks. It is the least expensive and most effective method I have found, and you KNOW the moles are eliminated.
We are also going to spray the lawn to kill grubs, to eliminate the food source and attraction for moles in the future.

Pepperoni and hard salami? You must be in New York or New Jersey. A lot of times they are a neighborhood problem sort of like crime. Keep an eye on the next door neighbor's yard for tunnels. Oh..Down here in Virginia we use Juicy Fruit gum.

When I lived in Europe on an old farm, the father of the family I lived with showed me how to get rid of moles. You have to sit very still and very quiet and watch for the moving mound. Since they cannot see, they have a very sensitve nose and feel for vibration. You slowly walk away from the mole, but ahead of the direction he is going. When he gets close enough, you quickly push a shovel into the ground in front of him. He will run into it and because the nose is so sensitive, it will kill him. You did him up and get rid of him.
I have never felt fur so soft, without being processed, and all he had for an injury was a small spot of blood on his nose. A mole will make a dog very ill if it catches one and bites it, just wanted to put in the warning.
Thank you for bringing back one of those "Norman Rockwell" memories with your question, it was like fishing, just quietly sitting in the sun waiting for that mole.

you could try smoking them out. run a hose from a strimmer or other 2 stroke engine. mix the fuel with extra oil and put the hose into the mole tunnel and run the engine at high revs for a while. my lawn was being destroyed by moles and they dissapeared within 2 days after doing this.
you can tell the active runs if you keep treading down the mole hills. they will keep pushing the used ones up again. the more you tread down the more they push up. it gets to the point where you can tread a hill down and they will push up again within 10 mins or so. you caould also try waiting for the movement and then quickly push in a garden fork or simular.Posted 1 year ago # -
Many years ago there was a product called "mole a way" It was basically a smoke bomb that you would light ( like a firecracker) and set in the runway then close the opening. Has anyone seen that on the market today?

We used to use smoke bombs that you got around the fourth of July for smoking out chipmunks. Could that be similar or did 'mole a way' have a poison or deterrent?

Moles are not rodents. They are insectivores, related to a bat or shrew. Moles have voracious appetites, eating 75% of their body weight each day. Their favorite food is earthworms, then grubs, insect larva, lizards, frogs. They aren’t picky. Moles feed in damp soil where earthworms and insects live. Moles travel great distances to feed. Moles cannot store body fat or food.
Moles can create serious damage very quickly. There a many wives tales’ and home remedies for controlling moles, but trapping is the ONLY method of truly identifying and removing the pest from your property. Are you talking about "live" trapping or those guillotine looking things that cut them in half? Both seem a lttle extreme..is there any way to just make them leave? I've been to Purdue and I have a hard time imagining anyone there actually living in the real world. Hey..maybe I'm wrong..just a thought

Oh, getagrip. Up to your old shenanigans. She's right, actually. Trapping is the better way to get rid of moles in the short term. Problem is, the moles that aren't on your property will realize that there's new (used?) territory to be had and when they have young, the young will move in and take the (dead? departed?) moles' places. It's a constant battle. Then again, what in life, is not a constant battle?

Or....are you ready for this? Pass a law..put a bounty on the moles. Let the gov't pay for mole fur. It'll be great, just like we did to the buffalo, wolf, coyote,bear and some things we called Indians. Then we can put the ones that are left in a place called a "Zoo". It's a win win..everybody makes money! Later when the grubs have eaten our lawns and we're overrun by insects..well, we'll just deny the whole thing. Why not leave the moles alone.

I trapped (killed) 14 moles in one day!! I used what I call the jaws of death trap, but the real trick was using EARTHWORM SCENT from the fishing department at K-mart or Wal Mart.
I put it near the trigger and the critters came running - thought dinner was being served.
