That's a good question, rich. Let me do some research when I get back from Chicago and I'll let you know what I come up with. Until then, I'm open to hearing suggestions from some of our readers. Does anyone have a method for preventing skunks from chewing up lawns that might help Rich?

By the way, Rich, where are you from? Your geographic location (ie. urban, suburban, rural) might help others figure out how to get rid of your skunk problem.

Consider this..the skunks are there for a reason. Not that they like Rich so much. It must be a garden or dropped vegetation or a lot of insects to eat. Remove these things. If that fails remember that skunks are highly intellegent and make excellent pets.

Hi. I have a very particular situation regarding skunks. I live in the hills in Southern California, and there are plenty of critters around the property, including skunks. It's just the way it is, and I have no problem with their being here and little fear of getting sprayed. They are so used to people that they rarely freak out enough to spray.

However, some of the skunks are small enough to fit through my cat door (I have two indoor/outdoor cats), and sometimes they come in to eat my cat's food. I travel frequently, and the problem usually worsens when I'm gone and there is little activity around the house.

I wouldn't mind feeding the skunks in addition to my cats, but I've recently switched to an extremely expensive dry food, and this problem is now costing me a fortune. Plus, when there is increased skunk presence, my mail cat tends to spray more, not a pleasant situation at all.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can deter the skunks from coming in the cat door, but still keep it friendly for the cats?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

OK the cats are telling the skunks it's thier turf. The skunks don't get it. They think..YO..food for everyone. Ok ..So feed the skunks away from the house. 3 feet tomorrow..6 feet next day..9 feet nextday..until they're in the woods again. Your Dominate cat just told you" Hey..Skunks can't jump!!" but you didn't hear him. So if you can set the door HIGHER..(3 feet or more). Cats rule. But let me get a second opinion..Samaoya22? Whats your take on this one?
