Have you called a local beekeeper? Many will take them out for free, if they can get the whole nest to take with them.

I agree with Lex here. Calling a beekeeper before you do anything would be a wise decision.

If you kill the honey bees..consider this..The workers keep the honey cool and stable. If they're gone and it's summertime the ooze and smell of the melting honey will drive you out of your own house. Don't mess with mother nature..or her honey bees.
