Please help. They are called cutworm moths, and they're small, about 2 cms in length, and I have an infestation of them in my home. They are all over, all 3 floors of my house. They are mostly in the basement, where I had kept some dog food. I hear they like bird food too and have found them in my bedroom near the birdcage. I've vacuumed most of them in the basement but want to make sure I get rid of all of them. Any advice?

ZZZZZZZ Huh Wha?! A question..UH..Do me a favor and look up Almond moth or Angoumois grain moth or Indian meal moth and see if maybe that's your problem. Cutworms (caterpillar) and their moths are usually on plants so unless you live in a greenhouse it may be one of those.If so let us know and all you have to do is remove the harborage ie. the dog food,the bird food. Freeze it if you must.Consider this, when I was little we were so poor my mom wouldn't let me have a dog so I raised Indian meal moths.It was great until they got away. The landlord didn't think it was funny.

Haha! Thanks. I think they may be Indian meal moths, I googled them and they look just like them. I had seen another picture under google and it said "cutworm" so I figured that must be the name. This is the first time I have ever been infested by them. The only thing I can think of is that I have a garden outside that may be bringing them in, as I have seen them flying from the pepper plants. But they are also in my basement, as they like damp, dark places. I have vacuumed and let lots of light in, opened up the door and windows and there seem to be less of them. I also put lavender all around the basement and house because they dont like it. Packaged up the dog food and may refrigerate it as you said.

Believe it or not you probably brought them in with the dry dog food or the bird food. The eggs may have been laid while the product was in a warehouse somewhere. Then packaged and sent to your local retail store. I saw them years ago living on rodent bait blocks.. eating the seeds..The key is quarantine the breeding source as we discussed. And don't allow them to "re infest" another source such as peanuts, cookies anything with a paper or cardboard cover. Good Luck.

To make sure you don't bring any more Indian Meal moths into your home, check the bottoms of all packages of bird seed, dog and cat food, flour, noodles, and other pasta products. Watch that you don't buy these products in a store where the floors and shelves look dirty. Flea markets are also another place not to buy these products. Be cautious and you won't have a problem anymore. If you can't get rid of the moths on your own, call any exterminator.

I use a product call the pantry pest trap. We call them pantry moths. They will infest everything including paper. These are stick traps with a pheromone. The moths land on it attracted by the pheromone and they die there. Keep putting the traps out even after the moths seem to be gone.

Bring in a spider. We had pantry moths for years. We did regular cleanings and they always came back. One day we noticed a spider in our pantry. It was a half inch black spider. We let it be there for a few days. When we finally decided to remove it (gently with a cup into the outside) we noticed that our pantry was clean of all moths and moth eggs.
