I have a wasps nest in my loft. I cannot see or get to it because the space is a loft conversion with no loft cover. I know there is a nest because they crawl through the back of my down lighters mounted in the ceiling and get caught in between the glass defuser and cannot fly crawl back leaving my light fittings filled up with dead wasps. If I was to take the light fitting out of the ceiling to investigate I would only have a hole of around 75mm to see through. Has anybody got any ideas on how to exterminate them? Thanks

I would suggest going outside and watching the roof line for a while ..I'll bet they have more than one point of entry to that "dead space". Once you find it use a dust insecticide to treat the hole.Good hunting ..let us know what happens.

I removed the downlighter and shined a torch into the 75mm hole and see the biggest nest in history (luckily it was near the hole) I sprayed a can of Rentokil wasp nest remover onto most of the nest and watched it start breaking up. I then wedged an old t-shirt into the hole and left the house for a couple of days. When I removed the t-shirt it looked pretty much dried out so I started to prod it and break it up through the hole with a long metal rod. Bits of it was falling of (disgusting)only to reveal more wasps deep inside when one flew out and stung me. I have put the t-shirt back into hole and am now going to napalm them again tomorrow with more wasp killer removal.

Ouch!! I hate when that happens! Your courage has made it possible to award you the order of the Vespula. Now next time wear long sleeves and a hard hat, turn off any lights in the room and close the drapes so that you are cloaked in darkness. Only open enough area to insert your spray tip and you may want to just tape the hole with a heavy duty masking tape, it's probbly time to wash that old t shirt. Naped those mothers today at 1900 hrs just as it was getting dark,with hat and goggles on. May do the same again tomorrow cause I'm getting a liking for it.

Yeah to right. I have nuked them now with 2 cans of wasp nest remover while in between prodding the hard honey comb like thing which they like to live deep inside. Do you think they will come back now the outer part of the nest has been destroyed baring in mind it is now well into October?

Eventually the repellant effect will wear off, I assume what your using has a petrolium base (oil), look on the can under inert ingrediants. If my spelling looks a little ackward my keyboard is getting a little sticky, what I just told another poster is to try Sevin dust in an old Elmers glue plastic container and "puff" the dust into the area. Long life residual killing effect and the bees won't even know it's there. But we will eventually have to remove it or we may get other bees or beetles moving in.

No mention of oil on the tin. Whem applied it drys out the area sprayed and the following day I lever of the dried out nest and find more wasps deep inside (these are dug in deeper than Bin Laden) so I am going to spray more and eventually lever it all off the side of the timber and leave the nest lying in the loft space cause I will not be able to reach it. I am assuming that you (getagrip)are American cause I am not familiar with sevin dust. Thanks

Sevin is commonly used as an insectide for tomato plants. You say tomOto I say tomAto..yes I'm American but don't tell anyone until the stimlus package $$$ gets down to my level. Curious though is the product your using OTC (over the counter) what makes it dry out the nest..alcohol? Don't forget there must be an opening somewhere outside that the bees originally came through, can you find it and seal it?
