   I just moved into a house that has been vacant for two years. The first week I was here there was a wasps nest over the garage, I used the spray & they went away. About two weeks later the built another nest just on the other side of the house in between the window & the storm window, there was a small tear in the screen. It took a couple of days but I got in there & sprayed them too. Three days later they were back at the same nest...I guess I didn't spray it as well as I though. I got up at about 3am opened the top of the window & let them have it. The next week they were building another nest in the same window on the opposite side. I got them before they got too far. Now I have them flying around the back patio trying to get into the sun room and I think they have build a nest on the next corner over in the roof drain. I am deathly afraid of them & I don't know if I can climb a latter to get up there. I think I would be too vulnerable. At this point I'm feeling they are out to get me HEHE. If anyone has a suggestion on how to get rid of them for good that would be great. They have the whole woods behind the house they are welcome to build a nest there, just not on/in my house. Thank you for you help

   Since there are so many types of wasps and bees and they all have different characteristics can you tell us what these guys look like?

   They have yellow and black stripes, an a noticeable separation between the front of the body and the back end kind of like a stick holds them together. The nest is held to the house by a single stick and honeycombs down but only half way or so. I have seen them up close because they were between the two windows but it is hard to give details. They look mean!! From the pictures I have seen they would most resemble a paper wasp but very black and yellow. Some of the pics I saw were brown and yellow.

   Sounds like paper wasps to me. They might be getting agitated because of the end of the season. Getagrip, what do you think?

   Yep..so you must get all the wasps in the nest because the queen will just over winter in the yard and do it again next year.

   How do I know if I have gotten the Queen? Would that be the reason why they just keep moving from place to place?

   I can tell you from personal experiance that if you don't remove the entire nest..stem and all the same or another queen will use the same nest. As for the queen..well Mom nature is throwing us a curve here..there may be more than one. The main one is always on the nest laying eggs, in the event of her demise the next in line will take over. That's why you must get all the wasps. Please remember these are beneficial and should only be controlled when absolutley no other solution is available. Look up "Polistes"
   and see if that's your guy.(girl)

    Thank you for your help I will keep you posted as to what they do next. I went out in the early morning & gave the nest a good spraying. I hope I got them all I haven't seen any in a couple of days. Not to say they haven't moved again but hopefully they have found a nice tree to reside in.

    Well I saw a few the next day in the front of the house but they were not congregating anywhere specific, I'm thinking they were just foraging. I haven't seen any since then, it might be because we have had a drop in temp of about 20 degrees in the last two days I don't know how cold it has to be for them to go away but it was in the low 50's yesterday and it was 40 this morning. Quite a change from the 70's of last week. I'm not worried about letting my toddler play outside but now he doesn't want to because I make him wear shoes...hehehe
    I did get a call from the previous owner this weekend and he said they were worse last year when the house was vacant. I can't imagine, but in looking around the house for old nests I found at least 10 just in light fixtures and in cracks and corners of the front and back porches. Maybe next year I can construct a wast hotel in the woods. If anyone has a suggestion of how to lure them to a place away from the house I am open to suggestions. Like I said I don't mind them as long as they don't want to live in or on my house. ;~)

    Getagrip, isn't there something she could spray the underside of her roof with...some kind of pre-treatment in the spring to avoid having wasps set up camp there? Maybe a natural oil of some kind?

    If we treat the lawn in "early" spring before the queens emerge we should cut down the population significantly. The rest should be repelled by a "general use" insecticide but it would have to be applied at least monthly outdoors due to rain etc. If the siding is wood a fresh coat of paint, stain or sealant.
