You can try hanging aluminum foil strips in this area. Woodpeckers will stay away then. Or you can have a pest control company do a free inspection. Chances are the woodpeckers are after tiny bugs or ants in the area where you say they are making holes. It is not mating season for the woodpeckers, so that is not an issue. The other thing they might be doing is marking their territory for next year. A fake owl or snake hung from the cornice would also frighten away the woodpeckers.
Thanks for the suggestions, the only problem with hanging something it would be hanging on the outside of our church building.i also bought a couple of large mwchanical spiders that hang from a string.they are battery operated and when the woodpecker pecks on the wood the spider drops down, but that didn't go over too well with my pastor no mechanical anything hanging from the building.so i need to find another solution.
thanks again
Any chance you can get the Pastor to go on vacation for a few weeks? What Rosie 471 says is the correct way to handle most woodpecker situations. Yours is a little different.So....it's time to "think outside the box". But before we leave the comfort of our box let me ask you a few quick questions..
Is the roof flat? Are you able to reach the area relativly easily? This being a church building is it a large area? Just the cornice? How many linear feet..approx ? I have a few wacky ideas about repellant ( liquid and in tubes) and maybe a new paint job, But we need to be sure we don't inadvertantly harm the woodpecker since they are all FEDERALLY protected and two species are on the endangered list, and don't post on a web site where everyone would ...OMG To late..
yes the roof is flat, but the holes are only accessible by putting a 30 foot extension ladder up against the wall. the holes are only in the cornice.about 800 linear feet of cornice.this cornice is relatively new, probably 2 years old, most of it is molded styrofoam.
If it's molded styrofoam I doubt there are any insects or beetles in it that the woodpecker is after. He must be "trumpeting" ( and what better place than a church!)
So he's letting the others know this is part of his territory. He will do this on all four sides of his territory. So all we have to do is help him change his mind. Can the holes be filled with putty..you can buy it in different colors now. Instead of the trusty ol 30 ft ladder that you have to move every 4-6 ft ( that's about 160 times up and down..whew ) how about a manlift? You can rent them from Equipment companies for about $120 a day. While you're up there filling holes you can apply a bird repellant with a caulk gun, that should make life just annoying enough for him to find another trumpet.
