What causes split ends?

There are any number of things that can cause split ends, but dry ends that have been heat damaged are the most common cause of excessive split ends. You shouldn't be convinced, however, that your hair is unhealthy just because you suffer from split ends. Everyone, to some degree, has split ends and it's not an unnatural occurrence; it's simply your roll of the genetic dice, and another reason to be mad at your parents.

Natural Split End Treatments

Be careful about which products you choose based on how “organic” they are. A lot of them will add a typically innate organic product like rosemary oil and then load up on the inorganic ingredients like silicones and synthetic proteins to make your hair feel soft and shiny.

Simply Organic products were started as a project by a man whose son was suffering from leukemia. At least that’s what it says on the label. One thing is for certain though, none of these products contain any dangerous ingredients like Parabens, FDC Dyes, and artificial fragrances.

Jojoba Oil products are good too. Jojoba has been touted by many in the natural health and beauty industry as the cure-all for dry and damaged hair. I’ve tried a product that claimed to use Jojoba oil, and it wasn’t easy to brush, but it did make me feel better about the fact that no animals were hurt in the process and that I wasn’t putting synthetic chemicals into my hair.

Henna products are good if you want a little color without the damage that coloring and dyes can cause your hair. We’ve all heard of Henna tattoos, those crazy designs that people put on their hands and arms. Well, if you want a little color without damaging your hair with harsh dyes and bleaches, a product with Henna may be the solution.

Are your split ends getting so bad that your hair is starting to look like the bristles on a broom or that you brush your hair with sandpaper? You've come to the right place if you want to learn how to get rid of split ends, but you should keep in mind that the suggestions below are just my way of doing things. I've been told by my usual hair cutting person who is qualified (I forget what you call them) that I don't take very good care of my hair but that it's the most beautiful hair she's ever seen. Maybe she's just flirting with me, or maybe she's just trying to flatter me in order to get that big tip at the end of our little visit. But you know what? I don't suffer from split ends anymore, and I'll tell you how I manage to prevent split ends:

Preventing Split Ends

To reduce tangles and get rid of split ends, brush your hair before you take a shower. While you’re in the shower, try not to bunch up your hair while you’re washing it. Make sure your hair hangs straight down, apply shampoo near the top of your scalp, and work the lather downward by gently working your fingers in a zigzag motion down the length of your hair. This will prevent tangles that encourage breakage when you brush after your shower.

To get rid of split ends, use plenty of conditioner during and after a shower. Some conditioners are good for your hair, and others aren’t. Generally speaking, those conditioners that are more expensive or found in reputable hair salons are the better conditioners. Conditioner will not only help keep your hair feeling luxuriously smooth, but it will also help prevent breakage and the resulting split ends by lubricating your hair. The problem here is that conditioners that make your hair easy to brush tend to leave more residues.

As a rule, hair specialists tell you not to brush your hair while it’s wet if you want to get rid of split ends. This is where the last two steps come into play. Let’s be honest with ourselves, and admit that we need to brush our hair while it’s wet because we don’t have a lot of time in the morning. If you did the first two steps above properly, and you didn’t bunch your hair up with your towel, you should be able to brush your hair quite easily when it’s still wet.

Don’t use hair dryers, curling irons, or hair straightening devices if you’re serious about getting rid of split ends. Anything that uses heat to treat your hair, barring “thermal hair treatments,” is bad for your hair. Instead of frying your hair on a daily basis, why not do what I do and take a little more time in the morning to allow your hair to dry without a hair dryer. Make sure to brush your hair in such a way as to spread it across yourself, exposing more surface area and thus reducing the time it takes to dry.
If you have split ends already and you want to get rid of those split ends, make sure to cut at least 1 and ½ inch up the hair to prevent further splitting. Split ends do have a tendency to keep splitting if you give them the chance. If you have time during the day, or in the evening, check your hair occasionally for split ends and simply cut about one to one and a half inches above the split end, and apply a conditioning treatment (pomade?) to the recently split end to ensure not more splitting.

Split End Treatment Products

I can’t pretend to know everything about split end treatment products because I don’t use any aside from my Dove conditioner which isn’t that great in the first place. The truth is, some people require more conditioner than others because their hair is more susceptible to split ends than others. I guess that’s life. If I was going to recommend a split ends treatment I would suggest any kind of thermal protector that helps to redistribute heat along the hair to prevent heat damage during curling, ironing, and drying. Nexxus, Ha, and Sunset Hair all provide thermal protection products. That’s just one thing to look into. I imagine there are a lot of “split end” treatment regiments online, but I’d do my research before investing your time and money into any of these “easy solutions,” you know? A lot of them are leave-in hair conditioning products.
